Hi Foodosopher,

Good points. Before I switched jobs (with a longer commute), I did something similar to what you mentioned, i.e., quick cheap lunches and, if I had time, enjoy a meal. However, no matter how convenient or cheap it was, in the end, I had to cook. It was that feeling of me doing it myself.

Hi Jessica,

If it wasn't because of my big appetite, I would get one of those frozen dinners as well. Said that, oddly, what you mentioned confirms what Foodsopher wrote, the total cost of your lunch was not that much different to my cost of cooking.

If I have time, which is rare, I love cooking at home. For work I usually bring a Lean Cuisine ($3), carrot or celery sticks ($1) and a "kiddie" treat like fuit roll up ($1).

About twice a week I'll go out for lunch. Tomorrow I need to be out of the house at 530AM (yuck) so I'm going to go for a nice breakfast somewhere on West Broadway. That will probably be $10 or so.

I do a combination of both. But you're right - eating at home is actually not as cheap as a lot of people make it out to be. Healthier? Definitely. But cheap? Not if you enjoy good food.

When i go out, I don't typically have any thresholds. Generally speaking, it has a lot to do with time, and what i feel like. Most days, quick, tasty and cheap (Pho, curry, stew, korean bbq, shawarma) are preferred. However, when i have the luxury of time, I do enjoy sitting down and enjoying a nice sushi meal, or some good bistro food. Depends on the weather, and time permitted, more than the $$.
