Rinconcito Salvadorean on Urbanspoon

I have an odd theory: Given a geographical location, there is a cuisine that acts as a bully to the other close-by cuisines. OK, that was a bit strange so let’s try again with an example: In Chinese cuisine, Cantonese dishes are better known that Hakka, Szechuan, Fujian, Beijing and so on. Likewise, in Europe, French and Italian are better known that Spanish, Portuguese, German and so on. In the case of Latin America, Mexican is better known than the rest.

In a way, it is a mixed blessing. In some places, that cuisine is somewhat similar with a different twist so, basically, is almost the same. However, it is also bad because you don’t get to know that other cuisine exist and, hence, the chance you might end up completely missing the opportunity to try something different. In a way, this is what I think occurs with this restaurant, Rinconcito Salvadoreño, which, as the name might suggest, hails from El Salvador.

I wonder how long has Guu been in Vancouver. What surprises me more though is that I have never been to one! When a group of ex-colleagues agreed on meeting after work and Guu was mentioned, I was all up for it. (On that note, some places refer it as “Guu with Otokomae” rather than Kitanoya Guu. Don’t ask what is the difference…)

We agreed on meeting in the Gastown location.

Colours of Fall – 20081022

by KimHo on October 22, 2008 under: British Columbia,Photo Essay

Depending if you use the metereological or astronomical or a solar term calendar for season purposes, fall can either just halfway or almost done. Regardless, a lot of leaves have fallen from trees and it might be difficult not to stop and ponder for a moment…

A Fresh Slice (?)

by KimHo on October 21, 2008 under: British Columbia,Food,Restaurant

My opinion of chains restaurant fluctuates in really crazy ways. I like some (DQ for their cold treats); others I learned they are sort of a niche (Tim Horton’s); others I don’t mind (Subway); and then they are those which, well, let’s leave it there. The fact some chains spread like crazy should be an indicator of… either how good their food might be or how good is their marketing/PR department. Fresh Slice, I think falls in the later category.

So how I ended up there despite that opinion of this chain? Well, it is said experience is acquired right after you needed it… Anyway, I was hungry and needed something quick so, in a way, I was willing to give them a chance.

Just a quick note to everybody: I am currently working in a couple of projects (both personal and professional) and, as a result, updates might not be as frequent in the next couple of weeks. Things should be back to business by Remembrance Day… Hopefully!

Oyama Sausage

by KimHo on October 20, 2008 under: British Columbia,Food,Restaurant

As mentioned in my post yesterday, in my visit to Granville Publick Market, I purchased a couple of sausages from Oyama Sausage. Specifically, elk, duck orange and basil & pepper buffalo. Here is what I got:

They all cost the same and they put them in the same bag
