Burger Heaven on Urbanspoon

Let’s face it. When it comes to food in Metro Vancouver, New Westminster is not in anybody’s picture. In fact, other than Kirin (in Starlight Casino), there isn’t any “big name” restaurants there. And that is stretching it a little bit, as Starlight Casino is the New West’s side of Lulu Island (where Richmond is located)…

One restaurant that recently has caught my attention is Burger Heaven which, although is considered one of the best burger places in Metro Vancouver, has flown below almost everybody’s radar. I had to find out who got it wrong: the media in general or we bloggers…

I was quickly seated. The table decoration was… Interesting, if you know what I mean.

The restaurant decoration itself was interesting in its own ways. Hanging plants? Different accolades from the media? For good or for bad, they had hockey that night. To the left, there was their “feature” menu… See below for what they had.

OK, I admit this was a crappy picture. No, this is not a zoom of the picture above, rather a separate picture. For some unknown reason, there was a longer-than-expected shutter lag. At least it clearly shows what was the “feature” that day.

Originally, I intended to order from the regular menu until I saw the features. Once I saw it, there was no going back. There was no point no ordering a regular burger, as it was something I could have any time. Rather, I went for the kangaroo burger (with pickled beets, fried egg, cheddar cheese and bacon – $16).

I had the option of french fries or yam fries. Again, I could have french fries anywhere anytime so there was no point on ordering french fries. Yam fries it was. Almost as a side note there was the salad.

Hmmmm…. Bacon! ^_^

The yam fries. It was more on the lines of wedges rather than fries. But, regardless, unlike french fries, it did not have a slightly crunchy exterior. Good in its own way.

The salad. Well, just a regular tossed salad, not much to comment about.

The burger after a couple of bites. Top down, the bun (which, by the way, is a whole wheat bun), lettuce, tomato, bacon, cheese, fried egg, pickled beets, kangaroo patty and the bottom side of the bun. The egg was slightly dyed by the beets. Also, since it was a sunny side-like egg as, after the first bite, the egg yolk started to drip out of the burger.

As for the almost obvious question: how was the kangaroo? It did not taste that different from beef, only with a slightly stronger taste and moist yet not too “fatty” tasting (which might or might not be a good thing). In fact, had somebody else ordered it for me, I would have easily said it was beef.

The aftermath… Did I mention it was juicy??? ^_^

So, in the end, how was the place? I think that there is no need for me to say it but, for formality purposes… It was great! Not only the food, also the service, a topic I usually don’t mention (hey, “I’m Only Here for the Food!”). In this case, the timing (from checking, re-filling the drinks, bringing the food, etc) was excellent as well. Definitely the remarks given by the media was accurate (for a change? ^_^). I will certainly be back here!

“Never play with your food”? Really, when push comes to shove, I am sure you will eat it…

Your pictures are amazing! They’re so vivid! And your descriptions are great – so detailed and clear. I’ve never had kangaroo before, so I’m always surprised and eager to learn about the textures of those certain types of meat. Glad you enjoyed it, and that it wasn’t just an overhyped establishment!

    Please share more :)

    Helo Pearl,

    Welcome and thanks for your comments! Will try to share more of these, though not guaranteed it will be kangaroo or elk or bison or… ^_^;;;

Such awesome personality in this restaurant…and the choices. Now that is what I’m talking about. Looks great and sounds like a destination for me next time.

It also reminds me I have some ground elk meat to use up; burgers this week it is.

And I think you should! I think that, although slightly more expensive than others, it is worth every penny.

I was watching the news this morning and I saw Kangaroo Chili. I had no idea that people even ate kangaroo, so I looked up places that served it in the Lower Mainland, and this popped up. I’m going today!
