L.A. Chicken
A couple of weeks/months ago, while guest blogging, I wrote some post about chicken, specifically, fried chicken (check here, here and here). Of course, my quest did not end with those post (in fact, I left out a post for Church’s…); that might as well be an eternal quest.
When I was working in Richmond, I was told about a fried chicken restaurant in No. 5 Road and Cambie; but I kept going to restaurants in No. 3 Road and/or Garden City. In an odd twist, now that I don’t even work nearby, something was bugging me. It was like that proverbial itch… So, That’s how I ended up in L.A. Chicken…

When I arrived, it was empty, which made me have second thoughts. Well, it was not completely empty, there was a table with three people in it. Also, I should keep in mind this is not exactly on No. 5 Road and Cambie, rather behind the strip mall. Finally, considering it was Sat afternoon… So, rather than walk away, I chose to take a leap of faith.
The menu is small: Friend chicken and some sides. That was it. I was informed they had so small specials: Whereas the normal 3 pieces with sides (fries, coleslaw, et al) was around $10, 3 pieces (dark meat all) plus coleslaw, gravy and drink was ~$8. That sounds good so…

It took them around 5 or so minutes for the order to come out: most probably they were preparing their first batch of the day. Notice the coleslaw; although they might have use pre-sliced coleslaw mix with some dressing, in my opinion, it looks (and tasted!) a lot better than that KFC’s mashed concoction…

I ordered their “spicy” version but did not “taste” the heat. Regardless, the skin was quite crunchy and, best of all, some fat/juicies were dripping out while I was biting it. Overall, it was better than expected. Price-wise it might not be the best deal but, for a change, it is quite good. Unfortunately, it is not a place I would visit frequently, as it is really out of the way for me. Otherwise, I will consider a re-visit.

Oh my, this so brings back memories! My very first job was at Lee’s chicken and this looks the exact same as that! I was forced to mix coleslaw in a blue rubbermaid storage container every Saturday morning!
Hahaha… We drive by this particular L.A. chicken all the time. In fact, this restaurant used to be a favourite for some of my wife’s colleagues – they affectionately refer to it as lala chicken. Did you happen to find out what the acronym L.A. stands for?
Hi Jessica,
Yes, Lee’s Chicken. I remember there was one in Kingsway, near Metrotown. But, that has been closed for some time already so no Lee’s Chicken for me. How much coleslaw did you prepare? I mean, if you prepare to much, doesn’t it become soggy by late afternoon?
Hi ET,
Sorry, no idea what “L.A.” stands for… But, “Lala Chicken”, now that’s a name I can smile at! ^_^
It was one of those 36″x12″x8″ and they really didn’t care if it went soggy!
