A month or so ago, shokutsu of Eat.Sleep.Dream…Food in a post about Insandong, wrote about population statistics in Metro Vancouver. There, I wrote this comment:

It was quite interesting you posted those numbers. In fact, I had the odd feeling you listed them to also say the cuisine is not directly proportional to the ethnicity. For example, you listed Filipino, which is higher than Korean, yet, as far as I know, there are only a couple of them (Rekados and Goldilocks are the first ones that comes to my mind). Likewise, Japanese population seems to be smaller than Korean, yet the amount of Japanese (themed) restaurants are a lot larger than Koreans (and other ethnicities). But, then again, as you have mentioned before, probably that’s because it has become more mainstream.

Now, for some straight figures, Statistics Canada has some numbers here.

If you look at the table in the link above, you will see a discrepancy between restaurants of certain ethnicities and the actual population. Let’s take, for example, Germans. While their figures are higher than Filipino and Korean, you only have a handful of German restaurants in Metro Vancouver. So, with that in mind, I had to ask myself: how good (or bad) are they? And, are there representative of the German cuisine? With that in mind, I went to Deutsches Haus, located in the Vancouver Alpen Club.

It is said you shouldn’t go grocery shopping if you are hungry. If that’s the case, why would there be a mini-food court inside a supermarket located, out of all places, in the second floor of a building in Downtown Vancouver? That’s what I asked when I was walking towards the Vancouver Public Library and saw this sign…

Wendy’s – Twisted Frosty

Wendy’s
Several Locations

Some people might call me crazy for craving something cold on a cold day. But, reality is, hey, I don’t care! However, after my ordeal with a waffle bowl, I don’t think I would go to a Dairy Queen any time soon… And what was the closest thing I was able to find? Wendy’s…

In an odd, errr…, twist (?), they don’t have soft-serve as McDonald’s or DQ; instead, they have an almost slushy soft-serve (called “Frosty”). In a move similar to McDonald’s with their McFlurry, they created “Twisted Frosty”. In my case, I got the Oreo version.

Unfortunately, it took me a while before I was able to snap this picture; hence it looks slightly melted.

I will not try to compare it to DQ’s Blizzard for the simple reason the latter is thicker (“gravity test”?); however, I think I can compare it to the McFlurry. In that case, I find I like the McFlurry more as the Twisted Frosty was too sweet. Would I order it again? Most probably not…

I love noodles in soup. Sure, there is ramen and/or pho in almost every couple of blocks but sometimes I want something different; something like my personal favourite in Metro Vancouver, Lao Shan Dong. But, while at work (West End/Downtown Vancouver), if I am craving non-ramen non-pho noodle, there are few alternatives. What to do? Fortunately, Legendary Noodle (and Hon’s) seems to fill that gap quite fine.

To me, Jamaican cuisine is a paradox: it is familiar yet it is foreign at the same time. On one side, for dishes like patties, rice and beans (or rice and peas) and escoveitch fish, there is a Panamanian equivalent. On the other hand, you have jerk chicken, curry goat and ackee and saltfish, well, there are none. So, in a way, it is akin to have Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde as a friend. With that in mind, I went to Kiss Yo Mama.

Pulled Pork – Oven Version

by KimHo on December 7, 2008 · 4 comments under: Food

A lot of times, it is thanks to “accidents” that we learn something new. In my case, I was making banana bread (sorry, no post on that one, it was something that I thought on doing on the spot) and, at the end, by mistake, I did not turn off the oven completely. (I did not realize this until the following night). In a way, I am ashamed as one of the first lessons I learned from my mother was to NEVER walk away from a heat source… Sure, it was barely “on” and the heating element of the oven was just warm but a mistake is a mistake. Of course, that also taught me I could use it to slow roast something…

A bit over a month ago, I made some changes from my old blog to what it is now. As part of the continuous changes/updates (hopefully leading to improvements), I would like to ask a question, as well as make some announcements…
