Van Dusen Botanical Garden – Festival of Lights (2008)

Another activity of mine around this time of the year that is starting to be a personal tradition is a visit to Van Dusen Botanical Garden for the Festival of Lights. Last year, I took this picture (found in my Equipment page), which is one of my personal favourites (click on the image for the full size version).

Despite (or because?) the extreme winter conditions here in Vancouver, I knew this year will be challenging, different and interesting…. Please enjoy this photo essay (and visit tomorrow, as there will be a follow-up of this photo essay!).

Despite it looks “funny”, no, no Photoshop here!

I purchased the ticket in advance so I didn’t have to queue to buy them. Oh, yes, I have a membership…

Although I was there early (4:30 p.m.), I spent already over 2 hours in the cold and thirst and hunger kicked in.

I had a hot chocolate (not from this stand; it was barely lukewarm and, despite it said it was from Thomas Haas, it was just OK)

Sorry for this shaky picture. This is a food blog and, needless to say, I had to have something to eat, right? ^_^ This is a waffle with wurst and some mustard. Interesting combination of sweet and savoury!

Hope you enjoyed this post and, as mentioned at the beginning, please come back tomorrow for a follow-up!

Very pretty. I like a gingerbread man the best. Haven’t been to Van Dusen since I was 4 or 5 so thanks for the tour! My sister said that this is the last year for Van Dusen because they sold the property to a construction company. Is that true???

No, as far as I know. Instead, they are/will be going through some capital projects next year and the park might be closed during construction.

This photo essay just obliterated my plans to check out this light fest personally. :) Looks like I won’t have to make the trip after seeing your images. Thanks! :)

Hey, it was supposed to entice you to go there, not discourage you! :o

Reality is, although I tried my best to take the pictures, it does not make justice to the real thing…
