Cardero Bottega

Sort of a follow-up of yesterday’s post, I chose to visit yet-another sandwich place. This time, Cardero Bottega, a place somewhat near my workplace.

Bob’s Submarine Sandwiches
6390 No 3 Road
Richmond, BC

Ah, sandwiches… Something so simple, yet a lot of places manage to mess it up royally. I have read a lot about a small place in Richmond that makes killer sandwiches and I thought, hey, why not! So, this is my visit to Bob’s Submarine Sandwiches.

Rikka Japanese Kitchen
28 8th Street
New Westminster, BC

My quest for good restaurants outside of Vancouver, specially that in Downtown Vancouver, lead me again to New Westminster. Burger Heaven – the place I dropped by in my previous visit to this area – was a really good spot. Would Rikka Japanese Kitchen be able to match that visit?

Khunnai Chang
Madame Elephant
Thai Cuisine
835 Denman St
Vancouver, BC

No, no joke, that’s the full name of this place! This is one of those places I have visited a couple of times but I always forget to bring my camera here. Is it fair if I blog about a place without any pictures documenting it? I am digressing here… A work colleague was leaving by the end of the month and, in an odd way, I have barely talked to him in the 4 months I have been in my new job. So, just before he left, I thought I should at least socialize with him. So I invited him to a place of his choice in the area. He chose Khunnai Chang.

Save on Meats Coffee Shop
43 W Hastings Street (inside Save on Meats)
Vancouver, BC

In yesterday’s post, I wrote about my visit to Vancouver’s Chinatown to check the area for the preparations for Chinese New Year’s preparation. There was a second reason: Save on Meats Coffee Shop, a place I have (guest) blogged previously.

There is a reason why I came back and I am blogging it again: Save on Meats will be closing in March (check here, here and here) and, despite the shops inside will still be open, as they are leased to others, it is not sure how successful it will be after the meat shop is gone. As a result, I wanted to make sure I drop by before that happens (yes, I will try to go again).
Since Chinese New Year is drawing near, I thought it would be a good idea to visit Vancouver’s Chinatown to check the preparations. I will be straight here: Despite Chinese New Year (this year) is January 26th, the actual celebrations are scheduled for the weekend of January 30th. Now, I understand Chinese New Year is not an official holiday but move it in such way… Well, I found it a bit disappointing. Anyway, I chose the opportunity take picture of the second largest Chinatown in North America (area-wise) and third largest (population-wise, both according to Wikipedia). And this is despite the diaspora of the Chinese population to Richmond. So, here it goes, Vancouver’s Chinatown.

Millenium Gate, near the “border” of Chinatown with Downtown Vancouver.
Angel Cake Cafe
5995 Fraser Street
Vancouver, BC

Note: cash only!
A lot of times, no matter how well plans are laid out, there are variables we might overlook and, as a result, these plans just crumble down. This is what happened a couple of Monday’s ago when I checked with some friends to visit a Filipino restaurant, Pinpin in Fraser Street. After we arrived, we found out it is not open in Monday’s… Ouch. After a quick “vote”, we went to the closest open place: Angel Cake Cafe (listed also as Angel Cafe).
