Ah, sandwiches… Something so simple, yet a lot of places manage to mess it up royally. I have read a lot about a small place in Richmond that makes killer sandwiches and I thought, hey, why not! So, this is my visit to Bob’s Submarine Sandwiches.

I will openly say this: Although I used to work in Richmond, I hate the roads in the area. OK, let me try again, I dislike a lot of the drivers in the area. I can’t say if it has to do with ethnicity or what not (hint: Asians make up the majority of the population in Richmond), I simply don’t like how people drive. They don’t yield, tend to block the intersections, don’t know how to park, etc. etc. (On a funny note about Chinese stereotyping, check a video called “A Chink in the Armour“, Google Video – in a new window – here). But I am digressing…

Bob’s is not a place you can easily find. It is in a mall across Richmond Center, in the intersection of No 3 Road and Cook Road. It is not facing any of those streets, instead, it is tucked inside. The best way to describe it would be beside Staples.

I must say I am a bit surprised to find this place in Richmond, considering the population there (again, lots of Asians). I mean, with all the oriental restaurants, would you expect to see a greasy spoon? Anyway, food is food!

I arrived just before lunch time and there were already some customers eating their lunches. I took a couple of minutes looking at their menu and, in the end, this is what I ordered:

Some onion rings ($2.50). Although they were not bad, it wasn’t good either. It was a bit bland. I think I should have ordered the (cream of mushroom) soup instead. Still, I was not here for soup or onion rings. I came here for a sandwich…

This is their Super Sub (6″ – $5.90!). It has double steak, capicolla, pepperoni, double mozzarella, grilled onions and mushrooms. The bread was briefly toasted on the hotplate. It was really a mess to eat.

As for the taste, it was mixed. The steak part was juicy enough; however, I found the texture of the capicolla and pepperoni odd. It think the fact it was warm, when I have almost always had it cold. The sandwich was really filling, in fact, even with my big appetite, I could NOT finish it!

Overall, this place is interesting in its own ways. Despite its shortcomings, it is at par, if not slightly better than Quizno’s or Subway’s. Though I will not drive all the way down just for their sandwiches (I would rather drive to Commercial Drive to La Grotta del Formaggio), if I am in the area, this might be an option.

I wouldn’t say sandwiches are my favourite, but when you have a nice one, it’s OK! That looks really nice, nothing like Subway … :)

I think you’re missing the point – these are Montreal Style Grilled Hot Subs – the grilling releases the flavour, juices (yes, and grease) of the meat. These subs are such a guilty please you shoud become Catholic after eating one so you can confess.
