BWI = Baltimore-Washington International Airport
YYZ = Toronto Pearson International Airport
To those who recall, in mid-late December, weather was a bit crazy all across Canada and North-East United States. As a result of it, a lot of flights were delayed or cancelled. Unfortunately, I had to fly on those days… Regardless on how good or crappy the weather is, I still have to eat. So, here are my meals during that trip.
To start, BWI. My flight (via Air Canada) was scheduled to board at 9:00 a.m. I checked in at the airport at around 7:30 a.m. which gave me time to eat something. Last time, my breakfast at the airport was crappy so, instead of having breakfast after the security check, I look for options before that check point. I did not really want to venture too far from Terminal E (where the gate for my flight was) and the only other restaurant I found was…

The menu was straight forward, composed mainly of scrambled eggs, sausages and potato hash. I have the odd impression this was the case to make things simple in the kitchen. After I made my order, I noticed this in the counter.

You make your own conclusions…
Anyway, as for the food,

Originally, fruit was an option (instead of the hash) but was told that was not an option. . As for the food itself, it is almost as expected, that is, something just for you to fill up your stomach, as tasty it was not.
Anyway, after that, I went to the security check point and wait for my plane. And wait I did! The plane was supposed to come from Toronto but, after 9:00 a.m., it was not there yet. We were told the delay was due to the weather in Pearson. It eventually arrived… At 10:30 a.m. As a result, we did not depart until almost 11:00 a.m. The trip to Pearson was short (a bit over 2 hours) and, a lot of us – myself included – had connecting flights. Mine was scheduled for around 2:00 p.m. After finding my baggage and rush through Customs, I found out my flight to Vancouver was delayed. Lucky!
I was not hungry yet and some of the places looked quite appetizing, one of them was Wolfang Puck’s Marketplace. The pizza’s there look tempting but was not hungry yet (after BWI’s security check point, I took Gravol and was sleeping almost the whole time). I decided to go through Pearson’s security checkpoint and look around. About 20 or so minutes before boarding time, hunger stroke. I had to get something quick and ended up here:

OK, I swear it is pure coincidence the fact both places have “Grill” in their name. Anyway, here is what I ordered:

There is a reason why I did not want to take it with me to the plane. Since the plane would be de-iced before leaving (it was snowing heavily at that point), if I took it with me to the plane, it meant I would not be eating it right away, plus I needed another “dose” of Gravol. Now, as for the food itself, I will have to say it was quite decent (grilled onions!), though it was far from a good burger. Price-wise, as you can expect in an airport, was slightly higher than, say, MickeyD’s, BK or similar fast food burger shops (Not that I am implying any relationship between price and quality in these places). Had I had more time, I think I would thought about it a bit more and most probably eaten somewhere else.
So, out of curiosity, what have been your eating experience at the airports?

Airport “restaurants” are usually pretty bad. Aside from the fast food options, the usual array of chain restaurants, etc. not much really interests me. The larger international airports do sometimes have some decent options though. I never pay to eat in airports, since I just use the travel lounges and eat what I want for free… a big difference between airlines though, no surprising the food in Air Canada lounges are always weak.
Just as you mention, travel lounges are an option; however, despite travelling several times in the last couple of months, in my case (and I am sure the same for a lot), I have not travelled enough to find it worth, not to mention I am allowed to upgrade to first class (as it would be expensed). Would I pay it myself? I could; but, since I usually take Gravol before the flight (which makes me sleepy), I would be half asleep… Would it be too wishful to have decent meal options past the security check? (Come to think about it, I think there was a sports-bar in Pearson…)
