Cardero Bottega
1016 Cardero St
Vancouver, BC

Sort of a follow-up of yesterday’s post, I chose to visit yet-another sandwich place. This time, Cardero Bottega, a place somewhat near my workplace.

If you look at the exact address, it might surprise you this place exists. It is almost in the middle of nowhere. OK, exaggerating here. Despite it is in the West End, it is several street aways from the main streets in the area (Robson, Denman and Davie). So, if you were to come here to buy anything, it is because you live in the area.

The name of the shop does not really give a good hint of what is being sold. Just in case, here is a shot of the shop:

Just in case, this is already half the shop! OK, OK, I am exagerating here. It is one corner. From this vantage point, behind me was the deli counter and on the other corner were similar shelves. Enough about the shop, let’s go to the food!

Just as La Grotta del Formaggio, it is a deli that serves sandwiches. In my case, I chose to go for a sandwich called muffuletta ($7). According to their menu, it has “Cajun antipasto, proscuitto cotto Genoa salami, provolone”. How authentic it is, I can’t say: this is the first time I have had this. However, just reading Wikipedia’s description, it looks like the bread use is not the usual one. I won’t hold it against them, though.

The key, distinctive element here seems to the be olive salad, as shown in the picture above. Overall, the sandwich was quite good. The combination of olives with the cold cuts really made the sandwich. Butter? Who needs butter! Now, despite some what newspaper cuts placed strategically in the outside window say, I don’t think it is better than La Grotta. If they could toast it in a panini grill, probably but as it stands right now, I will have to say it is slightly behind…

That sandwich looks so real, it’s prob because I am hungry, but it really looks nice.
wow
I watched a Bobby Flay throw down on food network a while back where Bobby challenged some brothers who make the ‘classic’ muffaletta sandwich. It was my first introduction to the sandwich, and while this doesn’t look like the original; it does look good. Maybe not my first choice, but I need to find track a version down one day. Did you get a side with it? Hard to tell scale.
Monchichi, should I add a disclaimer? Something like “Do no enter this site if you are hungry”? XD
Pearl,
Raidar, it was $7, sandwich only. On my way back, I got a bag of chips and Coke Zero. I got this one specifically because, well, it was not something I have had previously, hehehe.
I love Bobby Flay and its a lot of fun to see throw down every once in a while; although I’m pretty busy and don’t get to watch it as much as I’d like!
That sandwich looks great! I think grilled sandwiches are overated anyway, you never know how old the bread is. I will definitely try this place.
johnny, welcome! True but, at the same time, you can’t deny grilled sandwiches can improve a sandwich, either!
If you do end up going to Cardero Bottega, please, let us know what you think about it!
Sigh.. I wish I got your sandwich haha. It looks so much better than what I had.
