Late night eating… I have been stuck with that dilemma over a couple of months already… Browsing through different sites/blogs to try to find a decent location, I “found” Gold Train Express. Well, in addition to the fact I was driving through the area and it was almost impossible to not notice this place and all its neon lightning!

OK, actually, it should not be such a bad idea. I mean, it was rainy, it was damp, it was chilly, so a bowl of pho should hit the spot, right? Well, it seems a lot of other people, mostly teenagers/young adults (?) agreed with that. Yes, it was almost packed full despite it was already past 10:30 p.m. Quickly seated, I browsed through the menu and made my order.

Ah, your typical utensils and condiments rack on the table…

When I received the bean sprout side, I started to hesitate. Did I go to the correct place? Am I starting to get a bit too old that my eyes are deceiving me? Or indeed this is the most terrible side of bean sprouts I have ever received?

OK, never mind, that might be a fluke, let’s wait for the rest. First the spring rolls:

Oh, boy… When I saw the dish, I gave up… They look so miserable… Some of the store bought spring rolls looked better than these! Anyway, I was still hungry and waited for the pho but without any expectations.

Sorry about this picture, obviously, the neon lightning does NOT help.

At first, it did not look that bad; however, upon closer inspection, I just wanted to eat it, pay and walk away. Though the onions was a different twist, it was too oily to the point you can easily see them in the picture above. And, no, that’s not chili oil; that’s exactly how I got it.

At that point, I thought “is there anything else that can go wrong?”. Unfortunately, yes. When I stirred the noodles, I found out they were not loose, rather, they were all bundled, stuck together, which makes me believe they were cooked way ahead of time and were let cool. While I have no problem with this practice in the kitchen, at least, they ought to ensure the noodles looked good. Oh, if you were wondering, yes, those are the actual pieces of beef. Not even slices, rather, they looked like they were cut and pound thin.

In the end, after eating, I quickly paid and walked away. Stomach full but totally disappointed with the food. A pass for me.
