Hon's Wun Tun House on Urbanspoon

Ah, Hon’s… So many things said about it – good, bad, ugly, you name it. I guess it was just a matter of time I visited this place… In this case, I went with a work colleague for lunch after running an errand in Robson Street…

Just for completeness sake (specially to those not in Metro Vancouver), things said include:

  • Chinese Fast Food
  • Soup noodles are OK, but pretty much everything else is average at best and laden with MSG and most of all EVERYTIME I’ve eaten something stir fried I would find a disguting (sic) pool of OIL at the bottom of the plate.
  • Hons is Chinese greasy spoon

For more opinions, please check here. As for myself, I won’t categorize it in any way. Instead, I take it for what it is: a Chinese cheap, fast eats place. “Huh?” Some of you might say. Well, they hope you sit down, decide quickly, then the dishes will come quickly (a lot of times, not necessarily in “correct” order, i.e., appetizer or soup first), hoping you finish quick, pay and leave. As long as you understand the premise, you ought to be fine. In my case, I think I fit that clientele very well… Anyway, here is the food I ordered with my colleague:

BBQ pork on rice

Wuntun in soup

Tripe and brisket on rice

BBQ pork on rice plus wuntun in soup == $8.50. Same with the trip and brisket on rice. We walked in and left in less than 30 minutes. Cheap, fast eats…

With these restaurants or cafe-type places, they don’t pretend that they’re anything more than that, but usually the food is OK. There are quite a few like this in London, and I like them because they’re fast and reasonably priced! The food looks really nice.

I have also always just taken Hon’s for what it is….not a gourmet Chinese restaurant! I like their sticky rice, their potstickers, and the way you can choose what noodle you want in your soup!

Exactly! However, when cultures clash, in this case, expections of a restaurant, unfair comments will pop out, as you can see in the sample of comments above. If only those customers understood…
