Since Chinese New Year is drawing near, I thought it would be a good idea to visit Vancouver’s Chinatown to check the preparations. I will be straight here: Despite Chinese New Year (this year) is January 26th, the actual celebrations are scheduled for the weekend of January 30th. Now, I understand Chinese New Year is not an official holiday but move it in such way… Well, I found it a bit disappointing. Anyway, I chose the opportunity take picture of the second largest Chinatown in North America (area-wise) and third largest (population-wise, both according to Wikipedia). And this is despite the diaspora of the Chinese population to Richmond. So, here it goes, Vancouver’s Chinatown.

Millenium Gate, near the “border” of Chinatown with Downtown Vancouver.

Main Street @ Keefer Street

Georgia Street, where the well known Phnom Penh is located.

Gore Street, no relaton to Al Gore, I am pretty sure…

Pender Street, with the Yaletown high-rises in the background.

And now, some of the shops. How about some fresh seafood?

Or some Chinese dry goods?

Or some Chinese BBQ? Drool…. ^_^

And some fruits and vegetables. In the case of mandarins, a staple of Chinese New Year.

Now, International Village, where the Chinese New Year celebration will take place.

These escalators lead to Cinemark Tinseltown movie theatres. I will openly admit they scare the hell out of me!

Unfortunately, I have plans for that weekend but will try to sneak out of them and be here for the festivities, hehehehe. Will see!

oh wow! i wish we had a big celebration like that in san diego… it must be so fun!
Hi KimHo, thanks for showing us what Vancouver Chinatown looks like. It certainly looks like a big one. I suppose one of the differences to the London one is that most of the shops in the London one are located pretty close, all in the same bit of town. Good feature!
Pearl, I guess not all cities have big Chinatowns. Thinking of driving to San Fran for this festivity? ^_^
monchichi, thanks for your input! Despite this is mainly a food blog, I think I should start adding features like this, hehehehe.
