Some dishes have nationality all over its name. Burger? American. Pizza? Italian (at this point, arguable). Sushi? Japanese. Fish and Chips? In my head, it is British, though, in the UK itself, chicken tikka masala is now among the most popular. While I don’t recall any restaurants in Metro Vancouver labelling themselves as British, there are British themed pubs – but, that’s another completely different topic/issue. So, the next best replacement to me would be fish and chips spots. Sort of, that is. Anyway, while looking for another restaurant in Vancouver Downtown’s West End, I found Mr. Pickwick’s.

Although I arrived at around 1:00 p.m., technically after lunch rush, I would have expected at least a couple of customers still. However, it was empty…

I am sure that would be a sign, yet, I chose to stay and try. A quick look at the menu and made my order.

Although the lemon wedge is a nice touch, was the small, flimsy straw really necessary?

Two pieces of cod and chips, served with a small salad and tartar sauce. To those concerned about sustainability, the menu makes indication of which options are. As for the food itself, the good thing is that the fish was prepared after I ordered it (given there weren’t anybody else, I could hear in the background the fish frying). The cod, well, being cod, was a bit bland. I was hoping for the tartar sauce to improve it but, alas, that was wishful thinking – I did not find it “tangy” enough. The lemon wedge served its purpose; however, it couldn’t do much on its own. The fries… Errr… Chips were under-seasoned, though I am starting to think this is being done by all restaurants (and let the customer themselves add as much salt or other condiments on their own). The salad, well, it had a crunchy texture, at least.
Overall, the meal was decent but not outstanding. For fish and chips, I can think of other interesting places; for lunch, well, there are still other places to visit…

This might be a real dumb question but I have never eaten fish. Compared to a chicken strip how does a piece of fried fish taste?
That looks nice! You would expect that it’s easy to find good fish and chips in England, but there are too many places which do not so nice versions. You had the proper chips too, not french fries.
Family experience was great! Have to very young children our eating out can be an adventure usually. The service was right on the mark. I ordered fish fingers and chips and found the meal to be very good and fresh. My wife ordered the fish taco and enjoyed it also. As an American (California) I belive we received Santa Barbara style quizine at a price that would have only been possible at a Long John Silverse (fast food chain). Next time my family and I are in Vancouver B.C. I would go out o my way to visit the Mr. Pickwick once again.
