A stereotype of sandwiches is that of a lot of deli meats stacked high, served with a pickle on a side. I am not sure who started it but, in a way, I think that’s a bit silly (for the lack of a better word). After all, won’t that be similar to eating a huge pile of meat with sliced bread on the side? Well, to test that, I dropped by Kaplan’s Star Deli, where, as per a sign outside, does exactly that. How good is it? Do they really stack the meats that way?

I am now sure that when Robert Frost wrote The Road Not Taken, he was not thinking about getting something to eat. In my case, at lunchtime, instead of walking through Denman, I walked through Bidwell, the street parallel to Denman. I knew there was nothing there but I chose to walk through this street instead; after all, who knows what I would find. Unfortunately, there was nothing between Robson and Davie and chose to stop at the first place I found: Wrapzone.

Sushi… Here in Vancouver, if you walk around, you can find restaurants from almost all price ranges. To the uninitiated or the average consumer, the amount/cost ratio is a really odd, yet important factor. “Why would I pay $3 for a piece of sliced fish on top of rice when I can eat as much as I can for a flat fee” (or that’s the supposed to be the idea, read the fine print!). I think that’s the premise which restaurants like Kingsway Sushi operate.

Whenever I see a lot of people queueing outside of a restaurant, two things come to my head: They want people to watch them (hence, hinting where they eat) or the hype is high. Then there is the queue that sometimes form outside of Stepho’s in Vancouver’s West End. This is not a new restaurant; as for as I know, it has been there for ages, yet people keep lining outside to wait for a table. In my case, despite having lived at walking distance from this place, I never bothered to try it, mainly because I did not want to stand outside, waiting who knows for how long nor I bothered to order takeout.

Family Restaurant – The Quons

by KimHo on January 18, 2009 · 9 comments under: Comments,Random

I think I spend a bit too much time watching food related shows. No, not necessarily cooking shows (about the only would be Good Eats), rather “other” type, including one of my favourites: Anthony Bourdain’s No Reservations. However, there is a new show (actually, this is the third season) in FoodTV.ca (Food Network in Canada) called Family Restaurant which causes me to shiver. No, no typo, no mistake. A food show caused this reaction… What is this show about? Well, take a look at this clip:

It is funny that in the 1500 and 1600 blocks of Robson Street, there are 5 Korean restaurants plus a food stand inside Robson Market plus another in the side streets. Even funnier? I work near that area and, so far, I have not blogged any one of them! Well, I did blog Jang Mo Jib, however, that was for the Burnaby location. Anyway, probably I should start doing so and the first one is Sura Korean Restaurant.

Suburbs… While a lot of us (myself included) live in the suburbs, when it comes to dining out, we miss a lot of places just because they are out of the way. In the case of Vancouver, most popular restaurants are in Downtown/West End, Kitsilano, Kerrisdale and Commercial Drive (all these in Vancouver), No 3 Road and Garden City (in Richmond). Once you are out of these areas, well, there might be a good place here and there, it is a matter of finding them out. And, the way I found Shima-Ya…
