Adria Gelato
224 – 7155 Kingsway
Burnaby, BC

After my visit to Taste Nice, on my way back, I decided to stopped by somewhere in between for some dessert. Normally, if I want dessert, I would order it from the same place I am having my meal but I chose to do something different this time. Then I remembered Adria Gelato, a small shop in Highgate Mall – an area that has seen its share of improvement in the last couple of years. In fact, a friend of mine who used to liven in the area around 2002 said it has changed so much she could not recognize it anymore!

This shop is in the second level of the mall, next to Save-on-Foods so, if you are driving around, you won’t have known it is there. How do I know it is there? Well, sometimes I drop by the library kitty-corner to this mall, hehehe. Anyway, when a shop has gelato in its name, you have to order “that”, right? And here it is:

A two scoop ($5), the bottom one being hazelnut and the top one tiramisu. Before I continue, I must mention that day was slightly chilly (as in 3C, not too sunny and slightly windy). Call it “fight fire with fire” scenario, hehehehe. Anyway, the tiramisu scoop was not that good, as I could not really taste the coffee. The hazelnut, on the other hand, had a roasted hazelnut flavour, which was the main reason I wanted a scoop (I had a sample before I ordered it). And, in both cases, it was creamy indeed.

Close-up of the tiramisu gelato layer. Creamy….!
Overall, it is not the best gelato I have had but, considering the neighborhood, I must say it is quite good. I might drop by again if I am in the library again and want a dessert… ^_^

Goat curry and gelato. That’s a great day in my books.
It could have been better had it been sunnier… Not complaining here! XD
Had a very bad experience at this place. The staff member serving us (an older gentleman with an eastern european accent) was extremely rude and talked in a very disrespectful manner towards myself and my family. I was shocked in disbelief that he was the “owner” and he was in the customer service industry. This guy must think he is the “ice cream Nazi” (taken from the Soup Nazi Seinfeld episode). However in real life, even if you cannot honor a customer request, you do treat your customers with at least basic neutral and respectful communication skills which he absolutely had no concept of. The ice cream quality is average at best. and the shakes are mostly just ice chips. Would not recommend this place in the slightest there are far better places to spend your money on than this crap excuse for an ice cream shop.
Robert, welcome! Could you, please, provide additional details as to what was your request?
thought to put my two cents in here. I was with four young kids at the time and they each wanted something different. I requested to sample the gelato and was told with an unpleasant attitude that only one sample is allowed per visit. I have been to other gelato stores and always can try a few more flavours before making the purchase. According to my kids, the gelato from Adria was not so good because they did not like it.
Thank you Kim. I wasn’t privy to the initial conversation but from what I was told it orginally involved a “stamp card” that allows the 6th ice cream to be free after purchasing 5. The card had no expiry date, but the store operator would not honor the free ice cream that was felt should have been entitled. However, that was not really the issue. Rather than say “I’m sorry, but cannot honor this offer because of …” he resorted to rudeness, back talk and words like,”this is my store and my rules…!”. He also cut us off abruptly to service the next customer when they came in.
It was really the WAY he responded and tone and manner that he carried. He also went on about how hard he had to work to turn in a profit, etc. Yeah it appears to be a mom and pop establishment and we’ve gone there a few times before as we all want to support them, but when you don’t treat paying customers with respect, what goes around comes around. TLDR: we won’t be going back and would not recommend this place to others.
