Crêperie La Bretagne
795 Jervis Street
Vancouver, BC

After ed.chan (or was it Dan?) from Eat, Snap, Repeat wrote about Japanese Crepes on Robson, Andy wrote a comment mentioning Crêperie La Bretagne as another option for crêpes (this is, of course, trying to avoid certain chain). “Hey, I work nearby, why not!”, I thought…

I arrived before lunch and they were already several seats taken. Talk about busy/well known!

As per my personal policy, I try not to take picture of other patrons.
As the name of the restaurant suggests, they mainly serve crêpes (both sweet and savoury), though, they also have sandwiches. But, let’s be real, I can have sandwiches anywhere, anytime; not necessarily so with crêpes…

Can some explain why there is a syrup jar?
The waitress spoke with a French accent: Should that mean anything? Regardless, I made my order and waited for a couple of minutes.

I started with a small salad. Since I was going to order a crêpe, I thought I should have some vegetables as well. It was lettuce, tomato and cucumber with a slightly creamy dressing. I will have to say this is unremarkable, though I should ask myself, should I be expecting anything more?

For my crêpe, I ordered one with black forest ham, mushroom, Swiss cheese and bechamel. Oh, for the crêpe I had the option of white flour or buckwheat – in this case, the colour should have hinted it was buckwheat. Now, some might be “disappointed” it was not folded into a cone shape. Not that I care too much about that… Food is food!

I think I made a small mistake with this order. No, the crêpe itself was good; rather it was the combination of black forest ham (read, a bit salty) which does not seem to combine very well with the cheese and mushroom. In the end, while it was filling, I felt it lacked something.
Overall, I can’t say I love it, nor I can say I dislike it. Let’s just say it falls in an in-between zone. However, the fact that I would certainly come back (next time probably for sweet crêpes) would mean the balance is slightly leaning towards the “like” zone.

It was ‘eddie’. Our wordpress template doesn’t show the author name so it’s a bit confusing – we’re working on it
I’ve been to “Crêperie La Bretagne” once and my experience was similar to your’s. It was okay. I’ll probably go back at some point, but there are a lot of other options in the area.
How was the service? When I went, it was super busy too and the waitress was super rude. I didn’t mind that much because it made me feel like I was back in Paris
Eddie, welcome! Well, I had to go with what you had for authors in your blog, so… ^_^
I won’t say the waitress was rude but indifferent. Other customers seem happy though.
Interesting combination. I don’t think I would have thought about putting that together. I’m not much of a savory crepe fan, which is weird I guess because I change up my sandwich breads all the time. Really it is just another ‘food encasing’ option. Hmmm.
It’s funny you mention the cone shape, as I was thinking as I read with my eyes – I wonder if he gave it a quick unfold and refold.
Was the syrup not for the crepe? Like if you ordered the plain crepe.
Raidar, based on pictures I have seen from other bloggers on this place, it seems savoury crêpes are folded like that. However, in other places, specially in open markets, they are folded in a triangle. I guess it depends on how you will be eating it (i.e., seated or as street food).
Monchichi, I would assume the syrup would be for sweet crêpes, the same way syrup would be for pancakes. If that was the case, it sounds like a crime (pouring syrup on crêpes); I would rather use honey or maple syrup. But, unfortunately, in a restaurant, these two are far more expensive that mass produced syrups, so I guess that ends up being a functional alternative.
Hi Kim,
I’ve been Crêperie La Bretagne a few times and I find that it’s pretty good compared to Cafe Crepe. I usually order the non-buckwheat version. Some nice ones to try are: La Quebecoise, La Sarladaise and Ratatouille & Swiss Cheese (I add salmon with extra cost). The crepes gratin are not my faves as it is really artery clogging rich and very filling.
As for the service, I wouldn’t say it was good or bad. It was ok.
Annie, welcome! Thanks for the suggestion. Next time I am there, I will have a better idea of what to order.
the last picture looks disgusting blaahh !

One of my french canadian freind recommended me go to there.
I went to go this restaurant with parents.
We spent time in there and was very satisfied.
I just imagined when I was traveling in Europe.
Thank you for making delicious crepes and serving with wonderful smile.
When I have time I must go there again.
