Chau Kitchen & Bar
1500 Robson Street
Vancouver, BC

There are some dishes we perceive as simple and humble. Take pho, for example, a simple bowl of rice noodles and some meat in a broth flavoured with different spices. OK, that might be have been over-simplifying it but I can’t help myself doing that. So what happens when you serve such simple, humble dish in a more modern (*) environment? Though that is not necessarily the intent of Chau Kitchen & Bar, the fact it is not your regular Vietnamese joint and pho is served, I knew I had to come here and have some pho.
(* – Editor’s note: originally I used the word “upscale”. Upon further thought, I think that was a bad word selection. Instead, modern seems to be more appropriate).

Maxim’s Bakery
Several locations across Metro Vancouver
Unit 161 – 4800 Kingsway (Metrotown – Location visited)

Pork buns, cha siu bao, call it whatever you want, when you hear it, you know it is a staple of Chinese bakeries. With such a large Chinese population in Metro Vancouver, you would expect a good deal of these bakeries – and the largest one of all being Maxim’s Bakery.

Sorry for the low quality of this picture; it was taken with my cell-phone

Acacia Fillo Bar
1103 Denman Street
Vancouver, BC

Sometimes, the exterior of the shop could make or break the restaurant. If you can’t entice casual customers to walk in, or even help them find the restaurant, you might not necessarily be helping yourself. In my case, I have walked by Denman Street countless amount of times and I did not realize Acacia Fillo Bar was there if not by a post by Degan of Vancouver Ethnic Eats.

Every time I walked by, I thought it was part of either Delaney’s or Fatburger!

Adria Gelato
224 – 7155 Kingsway
Burnaby, BC

After my visit to Taste Nice, on my way back, I decided to stopped by somewhere in between for some dessert. Normally, if I want dessert, I would order it from the same place I am having my meal but I chose to do something different this time. Then I remembered Adria Gelato, a small shop in Highgate Mall – an area that has seen its share of improvement in the last couple of years. In fact, a friend of mine who used to liven in the area around 2002 said it has changed so much she could not recognize it anymore!

Taste Nice Caribbean Restaurant
13448 108th Avenue
Surrey, BC

Surrey, BC… No offence to anybody who lives there but it is one of those places in Metro Vancouver in try not to go to. It has nothing to do with the culture or population or what not. Rather, I find it lacking… As a result, it shouldn’t be any surprise I have not blogged any restaurants over there. OK, I have not blogged the other neighboring cities (Coquitlam, Port Moody and so on) but given the population in Surrey, there ought to be good eats there, right? A couple of days ago, I had to go to the Whalley area of Surrey and that gave me a perfect excuse to drop by a restaurant. ANY restaurant, as it was around lunch time and I was hungry!
Now, before I continue, I must say there is a large South Asian population in Metro Vancouver. For some reason I am not aware of, a lot of them have chosen Surrey to be their home. Given that case, one would think I would end up in an Indian (or similar) restaurant, right? Well, not really! Although I have not really blogged any Indian restaurants yet, it is not because I don’t like their; rather it is because going solo to an Indian restaurant is an odd experience. But, I promise I will do that soon, OK? Back to this post: the first place that caught my attention was Taste Nice Caribbean Restaurant.

That’s macaroni and cheese, steamed broccoli and roasted chicken. And now, the story of how I ended up cooking this. Or to be more precise, blame this to…

Seri Malaysia
2327 E Hastings St
Vancouver, BC

Usually, once a week, I drive near the Pacific Coliseum for some after-work activities. Unfortunately, I seldom have the chance to eat in the area, as by the time I leave, most places nearby are closed. Seri Malaysia, despite being a click away, it has been a place I had in my to-visit list for ages. And, finally, I was able to go…
