Seri Malaysia
2327 E Hastings St
Vancouver, BC

Usually, once a week, I drive near the Pacific Coliseum for some after-work activities. Unfortunately, I seldom have the chance to eat in the area, as by the time I leave, most places nearby are closed. Seri Malaysia, despite being a click away, it has been a place I had in my to-visit list for ages. And, finally, I was able to go…

I got there on a weekend noon just past lunch time. In a way, the service was a bit too casual, in the sense nobody was there ready to greet you. Instead, I just walked to an empty table and waited… OK, it did not take that long but don’t expect North American-type service.

Spoon and fork, FTW!
But, hey, I am only here for the food! And what did I order for food? There was only one option for me in this case: Beef Rendang, a dish that looks like curry but is not a curry.

Yes, it was still steaming!
Here is the large bowl of beef rendang. Yes, I was on my own and ordered this! Was I hungry? You betcha! Was I full after the meal? Oh, yeah! I had it with a bowl of rice and that was all I needed, hehehe. (OK, a side of vegetables would have helped but…)

But, I am jumping ahead. Yes, this is like a beef stew but with a richer, thicker sauce – also, with hint of lemongrass and some coconut, not to mention the beef is cooked until tender and has absorbed almost all the liquid (hence, the thick, rich sauce). While eating the rice with the chunks of meat, I literally couldn’t help myself with the next spoonful. Feel free to call it addictive, if you want!
This is a place I am glad I visited and will certainly come back. Despite I ordered only one dish and it was only one visit, I left really happy. Or, as they say in Spanish “Barriga llena, corazón contento!“. Next time, though, might want to order something “lighter”. Nasi Goreng might be an option! ^_^

I really like your “only here for the food” attitude. I agree!
Looks delicious, probably why I’ve always wanted to attempt a homemade rendang. Buen Provecho
Raidar, it was delicious indeed! While not close to rendang, I am sure when you were in Central America, you had ropa vieja (literally old rags; however, it refers to a shredded flank stew). That could be an alternative!
TS, thanks for your comment. Back when I was living in Panama, service in restaurants was extremly lacking. As a result, I partially grew up partially indiferent about it.
Next time, try the Nasi Lemak if you like spicy food, this rendang looks really authentic! I agree with the service comment, but lack of service is OK as long as they’re not rude, would you agree?
I think it would be a shame if you were to be down south and not take in a dish or two of ropa vieja! Add a little plantain and a scoop of beans, now we are talking.
