Asakusa Sushi on Urbanspoon

After my visit to Yakko Sushi Express, I wanted to try the other sushi spots nearby. So, next in the queue, Asakusa Sushi, located about a block or so from Yakko. Would it be the same? Would it be better? I guess the only way to find out was to visit!

I arrived a bit before lunch and I had the whole restaurant for myself. Once seated and the menu given, I couldn’t help myself, once again, compare it to Yakko and Sushi Garden’s menu. It was similar, yet different at the same time; different by having some “grilled” items. But, I was there for the sushi…

I started with my almost usual appetizer: gomae. I was confused after I got this. I wasn’t sure if I wanted to eat it as it looked strange compared to a lot of other gomae servings I have had in other places. It just looked strange. And, indeed, my instincts did not let me down: It was just bland without almost no hint of sesame. And, as for their sushi…

I went for a sushi combo, which had two pieces of salmon nigiri sushi, two of ebi/shrimp sushi, two of tuna and a spicy tuna roll. To put it short, it was among the few instances where I just wanted to ask for the bill on the spot, drop the cash and walk away. While it was not bad, it was tasteless. The roll was strange: It was a regular tuna roll with some sort of sauce on top and not spicy at all.

Overall, I think I finished everything because I was hungry that noon. I think I was a bit stubborn and chose to stay. But, otherwise, I might as well gone to Metrotown’s food court, which is across the street. Could it be because I was there a bit too early? Could it be an off day? Let’s just say given the options and pending places to visit nearby, I think I would not find out…

oh ew – i’m so sorry that the sushi wasn’t good. have you ever considered sending the link to your blog and all suggestions over on to the restaurant? they might be more careful of the food they send out then.

Pearl, no need to feel sorry… Sometimes I just have to take the bullet! I have not thought too much about contacting the owners about this but, if they are savy enough, they should easily be able to check what is written about them without me having (or other bloggers) notifying them. Still, I will have to consider that. Thanks!

The roll doesn’t look appetizing at all. Thanks for taking one for the team!

I’ve stopped doing these random sushi stops as so many are so bad. The gomae here looks horrid – not sure if its the highlight and slight overexposure of your shot, but its looks too “white and creamy” to me.

shokutsu, I did adjust the highlight lightly; however, even without those adjustments, the gomae was still “white and creamy”, as you mentioned. Will I stop doing these sushi runs? May be, may be not. Somebody has to go and find out if they are good or bad, right? And considering you, foodosopher and the rest of the Foodosophy gang have taken your share of bullets, one or two shouldn’t kill me…

It looks fresh, but must have tasted otherwise! A compliment to you if you managed to make it look tasty even though it wasn’t.

I don’t know what you guys smoke but Asakusa makes one of the best sushi around. I never order combos or whatever stuff you described. Just try their tuna sushimi or maki. I stopped going to many other sushi places after visiting Asakusa just once.

Mav, welcome! You lost me there. the spicy tuna roll is a maki. Were you referring to something else?

Too bad you had a bad experience, but it wasn’t a good example of their normal product. We eat at Asakusa all the time, both eat-in and take-out and are always really happy with their sushi. It’s always fresh and very tasty. We’ve tried many other sushi restaurants around and Asakusa is the best.

Candace, welcome! Unfortunately, my experience was any but what you described… Then again, it has been almost a year. Does that mean I should give it a try again? Hmmmmm…..
