Denny’s
Denny’s
Several locations
Vancouver, BC
OK, I jumped the shark… Yes, in my desperation to find a place to blog about, I went to Denny’s! Nah, just kidding. Actually, I was looking for something to eat late night and the first place open I found was a Denny’s. Before I continue, I must say I have been to Denny’s before, just that I did not care too much about it.

Almost everybody has had their own share of experience and thoughts about Denny’s so I won’t beat the dead horse on this topic. And, then, there is the service, which might be a hit or miss… Previously, I have had really bad experience service-wise; however, in this visit, it was quite pleasant, I must admit.

As for the food, here is a wacky thought: Why breakfast items are the most popular items in a menu, to the point several diners, greasy spoons, et al, advertise that as a selling point? Because it is a comfort food to some people? Agree? Disagree? Please give your thoughts! Having said that, I ordered something breakfast related. In this case, their heartland scramble, which is made up of:

Two buttermilk pancakes.

Two eggs scrambled with chopped bacon, potatoes, green peppers and onions, topped with cheddar cheese, plus two sausage links, two strips of bacon and a hash brown.
In general, I found it was quite bland. The best parts were the pancake (after a good dose of syrup) and the egg scramble. Despite it looks heavily loaded with fat, the bacon and sausages were blah. Same with the hash. But, looking back, considering it was quite late at night, it was decent in its own ways. Would I come back? I can’t say for certain, if push comes to shove, well, I think it is better than those pizza slices I wrote about a couple of days ago.

Breakfast all day. Back in the days when some of us partied more it may have been some sort of bragging? “I had a Grand Slam at Denny’s at four in the afternoon.”
In Austria it is not uncommon to find Ham & Eggs on Dinner menus. Or Waffles for dessert.
It must be a comfort feeling mixed with the taste explosion. I know plenty of people who would love to have breakfast for supper if it looked like this. I could see it like a perfect treat; a supper that is both sweet and savory. Plus most people don’t really go through the trouble of stocking/making a slam style meal at home..so it’s like comfort food on steroids. But then again, maybe that has nothing to do with
My regular late night meal back in the day was the lumberjack slam, sub out the pancakes and get french toast! What says 3AM like 2000 calories!
Now you got me craving for some Dennys!
Side sad note: they shut down the one on Burrard St across Sutton Hotel. Apparently it’s been there for many many years. All gone now…
I Love Food Blog, I have been to that Denny’s and it was one of those locations where service sucked. If it is closed, I won’t say it will be missed. However, if you are really craving for Denny’s in Downtown Vancouver, there is the one in Davie and Thurlow.
