Intermission – Illuminate Yaletown + Spring… Almost there!

Ah, winter… Some people love it; others hate it. In my case, it is just part the life in the Northern hemisphere. (In other words, if you don’t like it, move to the Caribbean/Central America/similar places!). But, those who don’t care, or can’t simply move there and have to endure winter, what better than organize events to deal with this. In this case, Illuminate Yaletown, which took place last week. I must mention in advance I did not plan to go to this place. I ended up there by sheer coincidence… Anyway, here is a photo essay.

Sorry but this is the closest thing I could find as “suitable” for the frontpage!

Yaletown used to be dominated by warehouses; current shops have just adapted themselves to such environment.

Now, this is the reason why I was in the area… Unfortunately, it was cloudier than expected.

Couldn’t find a plate for this monument but you can see the dedication to Yaletown’s past in those panels.

And, now, part of the celebration itself.

Needless to say, don’t try this at home…

Call it cliché if you want, a giant ice sculpture where drinks are poured from the top.

Such a huge difference from the second picture on the top, eh?

More ice sculptures, this time, as a candle-holder; unfortunately it was windy and blew the candles out.

Ice bar?

Ice sculptures!

Shadow theatre! Don’t ask me how to interpret this, though…

I don’t know if this was supposed to be an all night event but I left relatively early. Just say, since I did not plan to come here, not being a shopper myself and most restaurants were full, there wasn’t too much else for me to do. However, for my readers, there is actually one more thing. As mentioned at the beginning, some of us have to endure winter. As a result, who does not look forward for spring? In this case…

I like the colorful sculptures (yes, I know they’re light reflections!)

Beautiful! Very cool… I’ll have to give Vancouver another visit sometime soon.

And if you like fire art, you’d love Oakland (California)… where I live, tons of fire spinners, dancers, and terrifying huge robotic fire dragons.

Naomi, welcome! I am sorry I did not notice your post sooner, as I am currently on a business trip and have limited Internet access. Although probably not at the same scale as in California, in Granville Island here in Vancouver, you can see buskers as well. I wrote a post about Granville Island last year and you can find it here.
