Yakko Sushi Express

After my trip back from Philadelphia, I was craving for sushi. Come to think about it, I haven’t had sushi for a while so I had an excuse. I was in Metrotown getting some groceries and the first place that came to my mind was Sushi Garden. As usual, it was packed full and me, hungry and impatient, decided to go to one of the other places nearby, Yakko Sushi Express. I must mention this just in case: there is another sushi spot called Yakko (located in Station Square). Whether they are related or not, I can’t say; just wanted to mention it.

After seated and giving the menu, I had a sense of deja vu. It looked too similar to the one from Sushi Garden. Anyway, food is food. I went for two items. First, the appetizer:

Gomae. Presentation-wise, it was a bit different from what I have been given previously. In this case, the taro chip on top and being served in a plate rather than in a bowl. The sesame dressing wasn’t too strong which was a bummer. Still it was good enough. As for the sushi, here is what I got:

Alternate angle
Seven pieces of sushi plus a tuna roll. The eight pieces, if memory serves me right, were, salmon, tuna, smoked salmon, ebi, octopus, ??? and salmon roe. The ??? was, well, I don’t remember that one. That was a memory lapse. Sorry! The interesting piece was the smoked salmon: let’s just say you could taste the “smokiness” of it which is a change of the usual seafood taste.
In a really odd twist (considering Sunday’s posting), while I was snapping pictures of the food, the waitress gave me this “as a courtesy”. Coincidence I was taking pictures? Bribery? I can’t say…

As for the item itself – fried scallops, I think it was a waste of scallops. It wasn’t hot, it wasn’t juicy. In fact, I found it was a bit bland. If this is an item from the regular menu, I would be really disappointed.
Overall, based on the items I ordered (and paid for), I would say this place is above average, compared to others. Compare it to Sushi Garden? Well, that would be unfair. I have been there only once for takeout, which I don’t think can be used for fair comparison. Otherwise, it looks like a good option.

I believe the ??? is scallop
I’ve noticed a lot more people taking pictures of their food in restaurants lately and I must say they get some great benefits. I’ve seen the cooks, the waiters, hostess, and managers all come out to greet and give them “samples” and even drinks on the house.
FBL, welcome! I am not sure if it is scallops but, given my ???, your guess is better than mine! As for “perks” of taking pictures, please, check my other post “Are You a Food Critic?“
