All the well known restaurants are, well, well-known. So, how do we usually find those hidden, mom-n-pop shops, shady places? Aside from walking/driving around, other bloggers, of course! In the case of Burger Burger, is a place I have known of previously but I haven’t had the chance to try because of the location and time – mainly time, as it closes by 7:00 p.m. However, when fellow bloggers like Kevin from 604foodtography and Sherman of Sherman’s Food Adventures wrote about it (see here, here and here), I need I had to do what was necessary to go there. And here is my post!

I managed to get there in an afternoon, an hour before their closing time. When I walked in, it was empty. In other restaurants, that would be a bad sign; however, I knew that might not be the case here. So, I walked to the cashier where I made my order.

My usual picture. This time, to make it “different”, I included the stand of a local free pamphlet called Coffee News.

While I was waiting, people was starting to walk in. So, after all, this place might not be a dive and people really liked it! Anyway, here is my order.

I ordered a bulgogi burger. Normally, I would have gone for the basic burger plus mushroom; that way, I would taste things without toppings to mask the meat patty. However, Kevin and Sherman had that covered so I decided to go for a deviation of the norm. But why bulgogi? Well, since the owners are Koreans, I saw no reason why not to give it a try. Sure, it would make it a bit more expensive than a Whopper or Big Mac but that was not the point.

One of the claims of this place is that their patties are hand made. A lot of burger shops make that claim, right? After all, since the kitchen is not always visible to customers, they can easily get away with… Sure but what about the picture above? Since I ordered the 6 ounce patty, parts of the patty “broke” down. And what do you see in it? I would safely assume that some of the mass made burgers would not have pieces of onions in it and would resort to powders instead… Am I digressing?

So how was the burger? First, it did had some taste as the mass made ones. Of course, this would be thanks to the bulgogi sauce they added. But, even if we put that aside, the texture of the beef was different. Not sure how to explain it but it did not feel as bound together as other patties I have tried. And the fact they did not add any sauces was a good thing as, again, it did not mask any of the flavours. Finally, the fries, although basic, were not bad. Now, I can’t say they were McCain’s but, from my perspective, taste-wise were good.

Overall, it was a good – no, better than expected. Sure, you won’t have the fancy dining room or waitresses serving you the food. However, in the end, it is food that matters and Burger Burger delivered.

(Sidenote to Kevin and Sherman: they are aware of Wally’s; however, they are not related).

Ah, thanks Kim. Not Wally’s. But still pretty good for the price. So should I order the Bulgogi burger then? Or should I stick with the standard burgers?

Sherman, I would order the bulgogi if you want something different – it is one of those try once in a while burgers. Otherwise, I would stick with the regular ones. However, I am not implying it is not good; it is different in its own good ways, hehehehe

Wooo I was going to try Bulgogi on my next visit, but I think I’ll just stick with my regular. :)

Kevin, you can try the Teriyaki or the Chili burger! XD

The burger to bun ratio seems off in that second last picture. I know you mentioned you asked for the 6oz, but with the what looks like a pressed, flat top style patty..the bun seems overwhelming?

KimHo June 2, 2009 at 6:38 am

Raidar, yes, the patty was flattened and it was way larger than the bun. That’s why that piece of the last picture “broke off”. However, despite it was flattened, it was not dry!

Ahh, sounds delicious. As long as things aren’t so out of context that you end up with a bite of mostly starch! Bring on the meat!

I remember watching Diners, Drive In’s and Dives, when they talked about hamburgers that have a cheese skirt (basically excess cheese that falls outside the bun) and now having a another glance, your post makes me think a Burger Burger hamburger has a meat skirt! Which are probably the only thing better than a cheese skirt. :)
