Car Free Day 2009 – Denman Street

Another event that is starting to turn into a tradition in Vancouver is Car Free Day. Originally started in Commercial Drive, it has expanded now to include Denman Street, Main Street and Kitsilano. But what is this event? The name might suggests exactly that but, after being in two of these events, it is not only about not driving, but also about community. Enjoy this photo essay!

Not sure if it is really noticeable but there is a person seated on a massage chair and this person is blowing a horn on top of her. Don’t ask, I have absolutely no idea…

Roller derby girls!

WestEnd Senior’s Network – “The Happy Hookers”. Again, don’t ask… ^_^;;;

You have to admire women who, in this day and age, dare to dress (even if it is just a job) in such vintage dresses…

Giant chesseboard, hehehehe.

Rope jumping, hehehehe.

And dancing!

Lots of live concert. Who won’t want to have a lunch like this? ^_^ (Actually, I won’t given there was such a scorching sun…)

And, talking about food, here are some of the stands. Here, Main Dining Room, a Chinese place that I have yet to go.

Kingyo, who were selling takoyaki and ramune.

Tango’s Gourmet Meats, a meat shop, who were grilling some wurst and ribs.

I got a piece of ribs from them ($4.50)

And some takoyaki from Kingyo. However, they had to lower their price to $4 (as opposed to $5 in their sign).
Originally, I was planning to go to the one in Main Street instead; however, something happened and I ended up in Vancouver Downtown. While it was fun, I was a bit disappointed, as I work nearby and have walked by these places a lot of times, not to mention, size-wise, this was the smallest of the four (given the streets mentioned). I spent a little over an hour here and left… to the one in Commercial Drive!

Woah I really missed this one! ugh I wish I were there. Were the takoyaki good?
