One Saigon

While there are several spots near my workplace I still have to try, sometimes I want something familiar yet not a restaurant I have been previously. In this case, that something familiar was Vietnamese (no, not that I am Vietnamese; rather I was not in adventurous mode). However, in the West End, I have visited most of the Vietnamese spots in the West End (except for one place which shall remain nameless). Willing to walk/take transit to a farther place, I chose to go all the way to Hornby to One Saigon, which I have “heard” previously, specially about their daily specials.

Following my trip to Stanley Park (see below or click here), I decided to go to Vancouver Chinatown Night Market – an annual “summer” event (technically it was still spring when it opens, but, hey the weather is good enough!). Since it is an annual event, click here for my post for last year.

It is said that Stanley Park is the Jewel of Vancouver. If you ever come to Vancouver, you should try to visit it. To give you an idea of what you should expect, here is this photo essay, taken last week.

XG: Kim, do you have any plans for lunch today?
Me: Errr… No. Any suggestions?
XG: I was thinking Thai (read: Khunnai Chang).
Me: Wait, didn’t you go there earlier this week?
XG: Yes.
Me: And last week?
XG: Yeah….
Me: Want to try something else?
XG: Any suggestions?
Me: How about one of the many Indian restaurants in Robson?
XG: OK, how about All Indian – Bar & Restaurant. OA says it is great.
Me: Is that the one you have to take the stairs? OK, let’s go.

Main Dining Room

A lot of restaurant says their cooking is “homestyle”. But, what does homestyle mean? If you parent’s cooking meant a take-out from the closest KFC or similar fast-food restaurant does that mean homestyle? Or, if food is so bad, homestyle is a nightmare rather than pleasant memories? Or, likewise, what if cooking meant bringing out something from a box (either purchased from a supermarket or from a shop like Sliced Tomatoes, which will be closing/has closed its doors) and put it in the oven for 30 minutes at 350F/180C? I know these are really bad examples but, when there are shows like Jamie’s Ministry of Food, it tells you how things have gone in the last couple of decades. I think I am digressing here…

Now, back to the topic, of today’s post, Main Dining Room is a small Chinese restaurant in Denman street. It labels itself, as show in the picture below, “Homestyle Chinese Cuisine”. Of course, Chinese in this case most likely means Cantonese but, again, that is not the point. The question is rather, do they cook just like my mom?

Just as the subject might suggest… Here I go again, Latin American food! Panaderia Latina Bakery (which, if you know Spanish, will fall into the category of Redundancy Department of Redundancy) came to my attention after an article The Georgia Straight (check the full article here). Non-Mexican food? That was all I needed to know…

Once in a while, I check with my work colleagues to see what or where they eat. Hey, I have to go to alternate sources for ideas, you know! One day, I saw a colleague eating some huge pieces of makizushi and had to ask where he got it from. (Now, I did not ask him because of the sheer size; rather, because it was something I haven’t seen previously). A couple of days later, I was on the same rush I have been in the last couple of weeks so I went to this place to grab some takeout. This place was Momo Sushi House.
