This is a part 2 of 2 post. For part one – Car Free Day 2009 – Denman Street, please, click here.
Right after my visit to the Car Free Day event in Denman Street, I went to Commercial Drive’s. While I had the chance to also go to the one in Main Street (my original intent), I ended up in this one instead. Don’t ask why, OK? ^_^;;;

Another event that is starting to turn into a tradition in Vancouver is Car Free Day. Originally started in Commercial Drive, it has expanded now to include Denman Street, Main Street and Kitsilano. But what is this event? The name might suggests exactly that but, after being in two of these events, it is not only about not driving, but also about community. Enjoy this photo essay!

Vancouver Farmer’s Market
Several locations in Metro Vancouver
It is that time of the year again and the farmer’s market are now open in several locations in Vancouver. Jessica of Yum-O-Rama has been blogging about them and this is my post on one of the (hopefully) severals I will be visiting. Today’s post is about East Vancouver’s Farmer’s Market in Trout Lake’s Community Centre. Enjoy this photo essay!

Wally’s Burgers
Concession stand in Cates Park
North Vancouver, BC

Last year, Wally’s Burger, an iconic restaurant in Kingsway closed its doors. In the same vein as Save-on-Meats burger shop, it had some neon signs and, while I did not go until a couple of days before it closed, it had its share of faithful customers. After all, it was cheap, it was tasty, it was a place where you could gather with other people. As per this article, the rights to the name and trademark were purchased and, its location in Cates Park in North Vancouver, most likely be the first among many future Wally’s. While any future locations might (or might not) open, the question was rather, does it live to expectations? Only one way to find out… Go and have a burger!

The last week or so, it has been a bit hectic for me. With some tight deadlines, instead of having decent lunch, I just go outside to grab something, eat and go back to work. Not necessarily a good thing but, (sigh), what can I say… To make things worst, my stomach start to grumble as early as 10:30 a.m. While I could easily go to a nearby Safeway, Subway or McD’s, I don’t want to go that way. After all, it does not allow room for an interesting post. In two of those days, I chose to walk a little bit further to get some lunch and I ended up in Steamrollers and Donair Spot.

Oyama Sushi
5152 Kingsway
Burnaby, BC

(In Urbanspoon, it appears as Sushi Oyama. For consistency purposes, I will use Oyama Sushi).
If you are in Metro Vancouver and you feel like driving along Kingsway (depending on your final destination, not necessarily the best route), you can find almost about anything. Malls (Metropolis at Metrotown, anybody?), hospitals (Mount Saint Joseph Hospital), a park (Central Park), etc. etc. If you drive eastbound, once past Nelson Street, there is one building that would certainly catch your attention: the Glenedward. While most people won’t know it by name (I myself I have to search for it!), everybody knows about that house with granite fences surrounded by more modern condominiums (as a result of urban development). Nowadays, it is a restaurant, and the topic of today’s post, Oyama Sushi (the previous tenant also opened a restaurant). Some time ago, however, it was not something that would combine with food very well: it used to be a funerary home… Anyway, this post is not about funerary homes but food (assuming you still have the stomach to keep on reading!).

Cultures Restaurants
346-4820 Kingsway
Metropolis at Metrotown
Burnaby, BC

Before I started this blog, I had my share of rants about food courts. However, due to other reasons, I kept going to one and, eventually, found out not all of the stands are that bad. Sure, you will have your Timmy’s and fast food chains; however, in some other food courts, you could end up in stands with food that can rival that of sit-down restaurants. Stands like Wang’s Shanghai in Crystal Mall in Burnaby or Matoi Sushi in Downtown Vancouver. But, the common part of these food courts is that they are part of oriental malls! (Mostly Chinese in the case of Crystal Mall, mostly Korean in the case of the food court where Matoi is located). Would the biggest mall in Metro Vancouver, Metropolis at Metrotown, even offer something that could remote match that of the Oriental malls? That is the topic of today’s post: Cultures Restaurants (or simply “Cultures”).
