Yakko Sushi

Yakko Sushi on Urbanspoon

Last month, when I wrote about Momo Sushi House, a sushi shop near my workplace, Wilson of La Petite Vancouver, mentioned Yakko Sushi in Burnaby. But, wait, didn’t I visited that previously (check here)? Well, yes; however, as mentioned in my follow-up comment, there are two Yakko Sushi, the “Express”, which I blogged and the topic of today’s post, Yakko Sushi.

Now, this is one of those places that you won’t know it exists unless you happen to know it is there. This restaurant is not visible in any way from outside Station Square (the mall where it is located, next to Metropolis at Metrotown). And the column blocking outside does not really help.

And, to answer Wilson’s question, yes, it seems both restaurants are related… But that put me in a tight spot: I already had a preconception of Yakko Sushi Express (at that time, average; however, after visiting Oyama Sushi, below par). Would I be able to judge this place fairly? Will see…

I ordered two items, here their sushi combo B (or was it C?), which 7 pieces of nigiri sushi plus a tuna roll. In the first picture, I focused on the bottom row: ebi (shrimp), tako (octopus), scallop and tobiko (? or was it masago? In either case, fish roe). In the second picture, the top row, we have salmon, tuna and smoked salmon. I will have to admit I was a bit nervous taking the pictures as there were only a couple of customers in the restaurant and I was seated (by myself) on the bar. Translation? I was at the sight of all the chefs and staff. While I lost long time ago that “fear” of taking pictures, it was still uncomfortable with them gazing at me silently the whole time. Anyway, as for the taste of these, I will have to say average. Fortunately, no smelly fish smell but no “sweetness” or, in some cases, certain seafood flavours I would have expected.

I also ordered one of the “specials” of the day: a roll made with BBQ salmon and cream cheese. Yup, you got that right, cream cheese. I ordered this one out of curiosity more than anything else. The salmon itself tasted like baked salmon, though I notice they had a blowtorch nearby. No crispy skin, though. As for the cream cheese, I will admit it gave it a, well, creamy texture, but did not add too much flavor-wise. Probably because they used the plain version of Philadelphia Cream Cheese? (Yes, I saw it while in the “fridge” in the bar).

Overall, I won’t say I was satisfied at all. In the case of their “Express” location, at least I called it average. Here, however, it was a complete let down. And, while I have not been to Sushi Garden in a long while, I think their takeout is better than Yakko’s offerings. Worst of all, if I have to compare it to Oyama Sushi…
