Belgian Fries
1803 Commercial Drive
Vancouver, BC

Earlier this year, I wrote a post on poutine, that quintessential, unique Canadian “dish”. It has been some months already and I think I have recovered enough from that experience (and the bypass!) to try it again on a different place. So, for this one, I chose to go to Belgian Fries in The Drive, where, according to their banner (and quote from the CBC Montreal), they have the best poutine in BC. Are they? Let’s see!

To those who do not live in Metro Vancouver, see you tomorrow, there is not much to see here! ^_^;;; OK, OK, just kidding… Two weeks ago, a new metro line in Vancouver opened: Canada Line. This metro line connects Richmond Centre, Vancouver Airport and Downtown Vancouver. There has been controversies, lawsuits and detractors but this post is not related to any of these. Instead, this is about the end result and my first ride through the system. So, enjoy this photo essay!

Kawawa Japanese Ramen
E15 – 4700 Kingsway
Burnaby, BC

According to Eat, Snap, Repeat‘s theory of ramen in Vancouver, the “quality” of the final product is inversely proportional to the distance from the corner of Robson and Denman (in Vancouver’s West End, where Kintaro, Benkei and Motomachi Shokudo are located). Of course, there is the occasional deviation from that theory like Menya and it did not take into consideration new places in Richmond like G-Men Ramen. For today’s post, a sort-of new kid on the block – Kawawa Japanese Ramen in, out of all places, the largest mall in this side of Canada: Metropolis at Metrotown.

Wok Box
Several locations in Western Canada and BC
1738 Davie Street (Location visited)
Vancouver, BC

A week and a half ago, I mentioned I wanted to visit Wok Box, an “Asian” chain restaurant. It had more to do with curiosity than anything else, specially considering feedback from other bloggers. The fact their new location is in English Bay, at a walking distance from my workplace, well, let’s just say it made things easy. After several failed attempts, mainly because they kept moving their opening day, I finally managed to pay a visit…

A landmark in Vancouver is the PNE – the Pacific National Exhibition. However, during the last couple of weeks before Labour Day long weekend, The Fair opens… And, based on my experience last year, I chose to go there again this year! Here is a photo essay of my visit (thought the pictures are not necessarily in sequential order, hehehehe).

Before you continue, I must mention that some of the pictures are below par for several reasons: lots of people moving around, zoom (and crop) to take snapshot of other’s dishes and so on. I apologize for that! Also, while there will be a lot of comments, there are also 50+ images (around 15MB total). If you are on a slow connection, please, be patient!

Sushi Bento Express
1258 Robson Street
Vancouver, BC

It was one of those days I had to walk away from my workplace for lunch. It wasn’t that bad, it was just stressful and couldn’t just buy something, bring it back, eat it quickly and continue working – I needed a break by… I had to take a stroll, relax and “reset” myself. While walking up Robson Street, just past Hon’s and Don Guacamole’s, I noticed a new shop setting up: Donburi-ya. That really make me want to eat a bowl of steaming rice with some soy sauce and meat. Ah, some comfort food… The first place in my mind with such menu would have been Hon’s but didn’t really want to go there. Instead, that gave me a reason to drop Sushi Bento Express, a place better known for their sushi but still…

Memphis Blues Barbeque House (Broadway)
1465 W Broadway
Vancouver, BC

Some months ago, I visited Memphis Blues Barbeque , specifically, their Commercial Drive location – you can check my previous post, here. That night, I ordered one of their specials – ribs – and the food was slightly disappointing. The general consensus was that I shouldn’t have ordered ribs; however, based on my previous experiences (in general, good), plus the comments in the post, I knew I should re-visit them. And so I did, only I went to their Broadway location instead.
