Pride Parade 2009

by KimHo on August 3, 2009 under: British Columbia,Events,Photo Essay

In addition to the Powell Street Festival, which was blogged yesterday, there were a lot of other activities this last (long) weekend. For example, Celebration of Light (which I chose not to go to because of previous bad experiences after the fireworks) and the topic of today’s post: the Pride Parade in Downtown Vancouver, brought by the Vancouver Pride Society. Now, before I continue with this photo essay, I must mention this post has absolutely no food component, some faces have been blurred (to “protect” them) and at least one picture contains nudity (while I personally have no problems with nudity, in one instance, I had to black out a section outright, as it might offend some). Since you have been warned I will implement some censoring/filtering on any comments. After all, you were warned!

In the case you were wondering, there were a lot of people!

I am still trying to guess who is making reference to here. (Current) Prime Minister Harper? Former US president George Bush?

No idea. I am not a religious person…

You were warned…

There was at least one person who screamed “arrest me!”.

Because they were moving a bit fast, I couldn’t zoom on time. The full banner said “HONK IF UR HOMO!”

This float is from CTV, a local TV station. Among the personalities were Pamela Martin, Mi-Jung Lee and Coleen Christie..

This was an actual fire-fighter truck and, in one of the “stops” some people started shooting them with water guns. Being good sports, they “fought back”. Here, the hecklers were reloading their water guns.

I had a lot more pictures; however, if I used them I had to crop a lot of it. This was because a lot of people with cameras (specially point-and-shoot owners but almost no case of dSLR) popped in front of me out of nowhere at the last moment and “blocked” the shots. Needless to say, that was extremely annoying. As a result of several of those instances, not to mention extremely overcrowded sidewalks, I was get sick and tired and left not long after. It was a fun but when it is overcrowded, it is more a matter of exercise of patience…

Aside from the very large crowds, I’d have thought the last place you want to be on a weekend is the area where you generally spend your Mon-Fri workweek. :)

shokutsu, it is one of those unfortunate side-effects of working in Downtown Vancouver: Almost all these festivities/celebrations take place there. Celebration of Light, Pride Parade, Christmas Parade, et al… But, in a funny way, when I was living there, the reaction was totally opposite – when these activities took place, I rushed to leave the area knowing it will be extremely busy! :D

Nice change of pace Kim. Great pictures; I imagine I’m not the only one who appreciates you taking the time to document and share!! Thanks.
