I might be overstating this but I try not to drink alcohol outside of home as the secondary effects hit me quite hard. In a way it is a gamble when you choose to go out for drinks and you have been booked all day for an event the following day… But, when you gather with friends to celebrate a wedding or to congratulate a couple who will be having a baby soon, you will take your chances. (But, just to be clear, I do NOT condone drinking and driving in any way. I knew I was going to be drinking that night so I chose to take transit). So, yes, it was such event and the chosen place was The Mill Marine Bistro in Coal Harbour.

In my Bon’s Off Broadway post, I mentioned what I usually have for breakfast. I am sure writing about cereals is not too exciting so, on an odd day last week, I took it off and, well, as you can guess, go to a breakfast place. Oh, wait, take that back: I had my regular breakfast that day, instead, I chose go to Cafe Medina for an early lunch but ordering from their breakfast menu. And, as some of you might now, Cafe Medina is an offspring of Chambar, a well known restaurant in Vancouver, so it ought to be good, right?

Salam Bombay

It seems to be an odd ritual I have been going through: despite I say “no to buffet/all-you-can-eat”, I end up going to one. Coincidence? Subconscious? Hmmmmm…. While looking different spots in the West End, a colleague mentioned he went to one in Burrard and Alberni – Salam Bombay. However, while he went and ordered a la carte, he mentioned there was buffet during lunch, too. Well, since I could use him to gauge the food, I thought it would be a good idea to tag along. So…

To those who have read this blog for some time, to those who know me, specially those whom I have broken the bread with, know I am quite adamant about attending open houses, receiving “freebies” and similar situations. It is because I am an average person who just happens to write a blog which tries to describe experiences average consumer would have. However, you can’t deny that, despite my public notes about what to expect from this blog, once in a while, people in charge of PR have tried to contact me (the most hilarous one being one from a local restaurant – which shall remain unnamed – asking me to wear my stilettos and attend an event). So far, I have chosen not to attended any events from places restaurants in Vancouver but, I was quite puzzled when I received this email:

Hi! I have a review offer for you from President’s Choice. President’s Choice is celebrating Canada’s culinary cultural mosaic
with 1000 Tastes of Canada.

Would you like to sample some of these products? We’d like to send you:

I’ve also got a release, backgrounders and images I can send. You can also learn more at www.presidentschoice.ca.

Let me know if you’re interested and I’ll have the samples shipped to you. Thanks so much for your time!

Rather than say yes or no outright, I checked with some other local food bloggers because, while I had some thoughts, I wanted to hear their thoughts too. In general, they were quite enthusiastic about it. However, I still had to ask one question in mind:

Dear ************,

Thanks for your email.

I will safely assume you sent me the email because I write a food related blog. But, before I answer your question, can you, please, tell me the expectations from your side if I choose to accept the samples? I.e., Do you expect I will blog it after I have sampled them? Will I have an independent opinion of the products? Please advise.

Now, before anybody tells me I might be making up this email, let me assure you, others were BCCed on this email… And, here is the response I got:

I was looking through Vancouver-based blogs when I found I’m Only Here for the Food. I saw that you write about a diverse range of foods (as you said Vancouver has a wide variety of offerings), and thought this 1000 Tastes of Canada campaign would be perfect for you. We would like to send you the sample products and hear your honest opinion. If you hate the food and don’t want to post about it, that’s perfectly fine. If you hate the food and want to write about how much you hated it, that’s your right, also. You are not entering any kind of agreement with us by accepting these products for review.

I hope this answers your questions, but feel free to get back to me with any other concerns.

Let me translate that just in case: Although I received these free samples, I have total editorial control over this post. No $$$ was provided in exchange for writing this post. In fact, rather than me keeping them for myself, I had a really good idea (something echoed by the people I BCCed): Do a mini-gathering and cook with these products!

Note: For a larger version, please, click on the image – it will open in a new window.
Note 2: To readers outside of Canada, President’s Choice is a private label brand of Loblaws, who operates different supermarkets in Canada, the best known being Superstore and the recently purchased T&T.

Ba Le Deli & Bakery

Because of my professional background, one of the mantras we usually “use” is that there is no such thing as a coincidence. Conspiracy, perhaps… I mean, what are the chances two similar occurrence would occur back to back? For example, if you flip coins and after 99 flips (where all of them landed heads), what are the chances it will land heads again? (*). Of course, by the fifth or sixth time it has landed heads, I will have already requested a change of coins but that is not the intent of this post. Instead, it is the fact that two local periodicals, the Straight and the Westender, published articles on the same day (both are issued on Thursdays – Straight’s article here; Westender’s article here) about banh mi; aka, Vietnamese sandwiches; aka, Vietnamese subs. To make it even freakier? Fellow food blogger Sherman scheduled a post on one of the shops listed on those articles on the following Sunday… And, yes, by now, you can guess this post is about banh mi. And the place I ended up going? Ba Le Deli & Bakery (previously known as Ba Le French Sandwiches).

(*) – 50%. Each coin toss is independent of the previous flip.

Last year, I did some guest blogging and, in one of the guest posts, I wrote about Anatolia’s Gate, a small Middle Eastern/Turkist restaurant in Middlegate. It has been almost a year I went there and, while technically is not a revisit (it wasn’t blogged here), I thought the food was worth further visits. OK, I fibbed, I was on my way home and Anatolia’s Gate happened to be on the way, hehehehehe.

Donburi-Ya

About a month ago, I was looking for lunch and ended up going to Sushi Bento Express. The dish I ended up ordering was donburi, that simple rice bowl dish with different toppings. On that post, I made note of a donburi-ya (or donburi “shop”) preparing themselves for opening. But, alas, similar to the shenanigans of Wok Box’s opening, I chose to go a couple of days after opening day just to find a sign saying it would be closed that day, not to mention I would be on my trip to Florida not long after… Fortunately, fellow blogger Tana of Cheap Appettite had that covered and made an early report of that place so I knew what to expect when I came back and go there myself.
