Blueberry World Frozen Yogurt

It is already the end of summer so I thought I should post this one before we hit fall in full force, hehehehe. In the couple of days after the heat wave that hit Vancouver, on one day, after lunch, I went to grab something to “finish” that lunch and to chill me down a little bit. While there are several places I could have gone, from soft-serve to bubble tea, I thought I should go to Blueberry World. Why? Aside from me not being there previously, just to “confirm” where serves the “best” frozen yoghurt in this side of town. (Of course, there are others outside of Downtown Vancouver but that is another topic of discussion).

Not sure about you but that Ronald McDonald’s poster looks scary…
Before I continue, some personal (and somewhat recent) bias against frozen yoghurt: If you want to have it as a dessert, fine; however, don’t compare it with gelato or ice cream. Soft serve would be something in-between but, otherwise… One other thing in my book against frozen yoghurt? Its healthy claims. If you really want to eat this for its health benefits, you might instead want to go to the nearby supermarket and grab some kefir or (plain) yoghurt. With that in mind, I went to Blueberry World just because I wanted something cold…

I ordered a small serving with one topping: here, mango. Doesn’t it looks good? But, wait, why mango given we there were other favourties, like berries – specially blueberries? Well, it just happens most of them were frozen and, at that point, I would rather get something I don’t usually get, in this case mango.
When I savoured the first spoonful, I would have to say it tasted quite similar to yoghurt, i.e., slightly acidic and not that sweet. It did not have that soft-serve creamy consistency, though; instead, it was borderline watery. Now, I don’t usually judge base on this, as sometimes with these machines, it is a hit/miss (sometimes too soft, sometimes too “hard”). But, come to think about it, it is possible it was due to the hot weather that it started to melt almost right away.
Anyway, I was happy with that first spoonful until…

That serving was just around $3 but you actually get 2/3s of it, well, I am not sure if its worth it. In a way, that dampened my experience… Think of having a samosa just to find half-filled with filling. Or a bun with an air bubble where there could have had some more pork (actually this do happen with some but… I am sure you are getting the idea). If it wasn’t because of this “incident”, I think I would have liked it more but, as is, it is a pass. Next time for a cold dessert, I might as well go to DQ for a soft-serve…

Hole in the middle. That’s the most irritating thing to get in a frozen yogurt place. It’s all a matter of dispensing the yogurt. If you do it nice and slow then there won’t be a hole. I once had an argument with a staff of Qoola complaining about the hole. What really made me mad was when they told me that it is normal. Now when I buy frozen yogurt, I tell them right at the onset that if there is a hole in the serving, I will return it. It seems to work. I don’t get holes anymore. It is such a rip off. You are paying top money for your yogurt and as you said you are losing 1/3 of the serving.
I went to the one on Broadway & Granville to try a free sample over the weekend. It seemed a bit on the soft side to me but I wasn’t sure if it was because I only had a small sample. My biggest disappointment was that they did not have mochi toppings because that is one of my favourites.
Hmmmm DQ soft serve! It’s so good.
Jonnek, I am not sure if I would have said that. Instead, I would choose not to patronize the shop anymore if that happens again.
Gigi, mochi? Hmmmmmm…. Why that sounds so wrong to me?
But, agreed about the texture, though, in my case, it was a hot day so I couldn’t pinpoint if that was the main cause.
Raidar, Hmmmmmm…. DQ soft serve…
