Thida Thai

At this point, I am sure followers of this blog should notice some patterns. One of those patterns is that, after I visit a restaurant, if there is a similar restaurant nearby, chances are I will visit it for comparison purposes. In this case, after visiting Thai Away Home a couple of weeks ago, there is no way I won’t try the competition nearby: Thida Thai.

Unlike Thai Away Home where it is more of a take out place, Thida Thai is a sit-down restaurant. Now, that does not mean you can’t order take out but the setting itself is for you to sit down. When I arrived, for good or for bad, it was empty. Now, it was slightly past noon so that me uneasy. Is there a reason why it was empty? I guess I was about to find out…

Fork and spoon, FTW!
I am not sure if there is a conspiracy or it is a “just because” case: their lunch menu is quite similar to that of Thai Away Home and Khunnai Chang. While that made the decision taking process somewhat easy, I can’t help myself ask why… But, regardless the reason, there are small things that makes them different. Whereas Khunnai Chang’s lunches comes with soup and a spring roll, here, it comes only with the roll (whereas, Thai Away does not provide either one). So, having said that, here is my order:

Green curry with pork, served with…

Salad with their special home dressing and spring roll

Green curry with pork
One thing quite noticeable is the amount of bamboo shoots in the curry. Not necessarily a complain just that it is quite noticeable. One thing that disturbed me a little bit was the dressing. I am not sure what is their definition of “home made” but I felt a bit uneasy at first. After taking the first bite of the lettuce, I wished I knew how it would look in advance and ask them not to include it. (I don’t mind eating a salad without any dressing at all). The spring roll was… Average… The curry is comparable to the other places I have been so far, so I won’t complain. Sweet, coconut-y, not that hot (though I must mention my tolerance for spicy-ness is a bit wacky)…

Did I mention lots of bamboo shoots?
Overall, it was good in its own ways but that is not the main “issue”. Instead, it is the comparison with the other Thai places in the area (Thai Away and Khunnai Chang). So, how do I rate them? Again, if I go by the curry alone, it will be a virtual tie. However, if I take each of their lunches and compare them, the winner to me would be Khunnai Chang, followed by Thai Away Home and then Thida Thai. Would I come back? May be, if I want Thai and only if Khunnai Chang and Thai Away Home are closed (the three happening at the same time, extremely unlikely…).

thai food is so yum.
I love this place, the next time you do decide to go again, try the coconut tom yum soup, it was SOO GOOD, and the stuff chicken wing was interesting as well.
I guess with restaurant, it really depend on what you order to determine if you like the place or not, because personally I loved this authentic Thai place, the owner are actually from Thailand.
Jenny, unfortunately, the wings are not available during lunch… I know making judgment based on a single visit is unfair; however, given the attention span some of us have (^_^;;;), it is a matter of first impressions. But, based on your feedback, I guess I will visit them again and other those particular dishes!
