I almost can’t believe it myself but… This blog celebrates its one year anniversary by the end of this month! Well, that is both true and false. Technically, I started food blogging by mid September; but, the domain imonlyhereforthefood.com went live at the end of October so, I think it is safe to around this date would be a nice “compromise”. But that is a good thing, as we are celebrating Thanksgiving in Canada! Since this blog exists thanks for readers, commenters and fellow bloggers, I thought it was a good idea to “celebrate” with all of you…

Before I continue, I will also like to announce some changes you will see in the coming weeks/months, the major one being the frequency by which I write posts. So far, I try my best to post five times a week plus a random post on the Sundays (and, depending on circumstances, even Saturday). While that is all good, this means I tend to eat out a lot. However, in the last year, I have gained ~4.5Kg (~10 pounds) which is not necessarily good for my health. I won’t blame eating out for it, still, I think it has an impact. After all, I tend to finish what I am served and given the ridiculous serving portions in some places… But enough of this!

I was thinking for ways to “share” the joy and the best idea I could think of was to do a draw. And the prizes I have thought of so far are three CDN $50 gift certificates of a shop of your choice (not necessarily a restaurant, it can be, say, Indigo/Chapters/Amazon/B&N), plus some to-be-determined random prizes. Notice that I did not specify where are these gift certificates are from, after all, some of you might not be in Vancouver, BC, or Canada! And how you enter the draw? Well, since this blog is far from perfect, I thought it would be a good idea to ask for feedback. So, tell me what I should do to improve this blog, what restaurants I should visit, things I should do differently or any feedback in general. Once your comment is visible/up, you are in! (This is important, specially if this is your first time commenting, as it will require my approval first). And, if you are a fellow blogger, I will set up a different prize pool just for you, after all, it is thanks to you linking back that has helped me establish myself. So, if you are a food blogger, just link back to this post (if the pingback link is not generated in 24 hours, please drop me an email to take you into consideration for the draw).

Now, some considerations:

1) Please, do NOT tell me to set up a Twitter account. There are personal reasons I would rather not…
2) While I will really appreciate if you come back with additional comments/feedback, I would also like to keep things fair for everybody. So, one “ballot” per person. (The exception being food bloggers as, again, there is there is a separate draw).
3) This post will be open for comments until October 30th, 2009. Sometime on the 31st, I will take all the names entered, sort it in alphabetical order and submit it to random.org. Once a name has been selected, it will be removed and the process will be repeated enough winners have been selected. Winners will be announced on November 1st, 2009.
4) The “prizes” are all out of my pocket. There are no sponsors.
5) CYA statement: I am doing this on good faith. Given the nature of Internet and because I know there are a lot of people out there not in BC, it is close to impossible to register this legally in any of the local gaming corporations. Translation: you will have to trust me I will deliver on this one.

Other than that, thanks for your support on the last year!

October 25th, 2009 update!

As mentioned above, here are the two additional random prizes!

  • One bottle of Deutsches Weintor Gewürztraminer (2007).
  • One bottle of Thornhaven Gewürztraminer (2008).

In the first case, it was a bottle given to me by a friend on her trip to Germany so I have absolutely no idea of how it tastes. In the second case, Thornhaven is a winery in the Okanagan Valley, here in BC, and really love the scenery and their wine! To quote a friend “that Gewürztraminer went down really smooth!” Now, why Gewürztraminer? I think that this grape along with Riesling are among the most undervalued wines. And this is coming from somebody who seldom drinks!

Now, there are some limitations for these prizes: (1) Since they are alcohol, the recipient MUST be 19 years or older. (2) Canada Post will not ship this – as a result, only people here in Metro Vancouver can receive these. If he/she does not meet these two criterias, well, I haven’t thought that far but will promise to make up for it!

Finally, so far only Chris of Eating is the Hard Part has set up a pingback (technically not a pingback but I am aware the link exists back to this post). So, had it been drawn today, he would have “won” the blogger’s prize by default!

Wow it has already been a year eh? Your blog is one of the ones I read everyday. And I appreciate not only the food pictures but your serious commentaries. Keep up the good work.

Also, please include me to your draw. Thanks.

I like it. NO TWITTER. Someone asked teh same question of me when I was in Vegas last week. Enough is enough, that’s all I said.

As for the rest, your Blog is great. Nice mixture of restaurants and related topics.

Thank you for sharing your food adventures!
Could you do an entry on your top five places to eat in Vancouver?

4 Sherman October 11, 2009 at 12:57 pm

Awesome Kim, congrats on one year! I highly respect your opinions and observations. You are a man with conviction. I’m lucky to have a fellow blogger who I can learn from and bounce ideas off of. Keep it up!

5 Kevin October 11, 2009 at 1:26 pm

Congratulations on the one year, blogging is hard work isn’t it?
I really am in awe that you and Sherman are very consistent with posting, one a day! You guys have too much $$ to spend ;) . Take me out to eat instead!

Likewise, I think that you are quite knowledgeable about food and different cuisines, and also very observant. Maybe a little too observant (aka, picky ;) ) at times, but it’s okay, it’s a necessary evil sometimes.

Jonnek, serious???? :???:

Peter, glad to know I am not the only with that feeling about Twitter!

James, hmmmmmm… That would be a tough one. Keep in mind that different people have different tastes and mine is somewhat “different” from most people. And, oh, I am not into fine dining, which unfortunately are places where a lot of people consider are “top”.

Sherman, thanks! On that note, isn’t your blog’s anniversary soon? ;)

Kevin, to a certain extent is hard work but is enjoyable. Unofrtunately, you hurt my feelings. :P

Congratulations Kim! As I visit your blog everyday, even Sunday in case you decide to randomly post ;) , I really don’t know if there is anything you suggestion. Your writing and describing is great, you are full of knowledge, and your photo’s are beautiful. Fantastic, fantastic! To another year!!!

8 Ja_RTW October 13, 2009 at 10:55 am

Hi there, I read your blog almost every day! Can’t believe it’s already been a year, congratulations! Sorry to hear about the weight gain though – I try to portion my food off to lucky dining companions.. keeps the bulge down :\

9 bruleeblog October 13, 2009 at 2:51 pm

Great blog! And I love the quality of your photos. The only suggestion I would have is to vary the photos a bit as I noticed that the majority of your food shots are close ups.

10 KimHo October 13, 2009 at 4:02 pm

Raidar,

Ja_RTW, welcome! Weight gain is something I will have to deal with myself but, then again, restaurants with their ridiculous sizes do not help.

Burleeblog, welcome, too! I will have to think about this one as, unlike most other bloggers, I use a prime-lens. From what I have observed, most use the starter kit, some use wide-angle lenses. Since it does not zoom, if I want to get a farther shot to cover the whole dish, I have to stretch myself back slightly with the odd chance I will hit the next table/chair/customer. As a result, I go the other way around and take close-ups. I could use my 18-70mm lens but… Can you, please, give me an example of how a picture of the food should look to use that as a sample? Thanks! 8-)

11 Wendy October 13, 2009 at 6:39 pm

Congrats on the milestone. I too work downtown and read your blog for new places to eat at lunch. I really enjoy the coverage of the various festivals as it has given me ideas for how to spend some summer weekends next year. Thanks!

12 Jacqueline October 14, 2009 at 11:42 am

Congratulations Kim! Has it really only been a year? It feels like it’s been forever that I’ve been following your blog.

Truth is, I find that your blog is great the way it is. Your posts are like mini stories of your adventures and you describe them so well that I can almost feel the atmosphere of where you’re at! Keep up the great work!

PS: your pictures are always so bright and awesome!

13 KimHo October 14, 2009 at 11:58 pm

Wendy, welcome! I hope I am not being too intruding but what area of Downtown? I am interested in looking the area outside of where I work and need suggestions as to where!

Jacqueline, welcome, too!

14 Darina October 15, 2009 at 9:13 pm

Congratulations on your blogaversary. I started my blog in March and have gained ten pounds as well Oh well. I’ve gotten a lot of out of this blogging business so I guess it’s worth it. Hope you have, too.

15 KimHo October 15, 2009 at 10:11 pm

Darina, welcome! I have spent a lot of time post-processing the pictures, writing articles and replying to comments – It has been worth every second I spend doing it! However, beyond that, I think there is one more important thing I have “gained” while blogging: meeting people and make new friends. That is, to quote MasterCard, priceless.

16 Sherman October 16, 2009 at 8:15 am

Agreed Kim, what better to meet people with the same passion? That is indeed priceless.

17 Anita October 17, 2009 at 5:17 pm

Hi Kim! Congratulations on your blogaversary!! Thanks for the advice. I can’t wait to kick-start mine! I think one of the best things from this as a reader and future blogger is that you get to meet the most awesome people. :)

18 Wendy October 19, 2009 at 6:37 pm

@KimHo
I work near the Vancouver Public Library (Robson/Homer).

19 KimHo October 19, 2009 at 7:19 pm

Anita, let us know when your blog is up! ;)

Wendy, unfortunately, I work almost at the other end of Robson Street (literally). However, I think I should drop by the VPL some time for possible goodies in the area. Come to think about it, is the Malaysian restaurant next to Ebi-Ten still there? Will see…

20 Wendy October 20, 2009 at 11:41 am

@KimHo
It’s now occupied by Coco Noodle Express which is most definitely not a Malaysian restaurant.

21 KimHo October 20, 2009 at 6:43 pm

Wendy, thanks for letting me know. I promise I will try to go there one of these days for lunch (even if that means taking an one-hour lunch!).

22 monchichi October 21, 2009 at 8:54 am

How many comments did you receive?!?! Congratulations on your blog’s first b’day! As they say, don’t trust a skinny food blogger … :) I have absolutely no suggestions on how to improve it as I really like it the way it is, and one of the things that make your blog stand out from the others is the frequency of the posting. But, like you said, if it’s quite difficult to keep that up, of course you have to do what you feel is best. Whatever it is, keep up the good effort!

23 Joanne October 25, 2009 at 9:53 am

Hi Kim,

I’ve been following your blog for a few months now! Happy first anniversary! I’ve always wanted to start my own food blog but never got around to it since I’m sorta web-challenged :P Thumbs up for maintaining the passion in what you do!

Anyway, one place I’ve been to time after time is Ningtu, which is close on Kingsway near Victoria – a Shanghai restaurant, which is family run.

Wishing you many more years of food blogging!

24 KimHo October 25, 2009 at 12:09 pm

Joanne, welcome! I think it is more a matter of inspiration (you know what they say about inspiration and perspiration! :D ), as there are different tools available on-online for you to do say (Wordpress, Blogger, et al). Don’t be afraid, just start and see how it goes! Oh, thanks for the resturant recommendation and wishes!

25 Jenny October 27, 2009 at 6:10 pm

Btw, I just wanted to say Happy Blog Anniversary!

You just made me realize it’s mine too, I never notice that we actually started around the same time. :)
