Lunch at Kingyo

Izakaya places in Vancouver are places I have seldom gone because you need to go in a small group; something I rarely have opportunities to do. Hmmmmm… I guess outside of my food bloggers circle of friends, I need to find other friends more willing to eat out… (OK, PO aside, who has been a good sport; in fact, he was a partner in crime on this visit!). Sure, you could go by yourself but that does not necessarily work that well, as you can only try that many things. But this post is not about the regular izakaya fare; rather, it is about lunch, something that might be an oxymoron if you are having it in an izakaya (unless you work graveyard shift). And, given my previous lunch experience in an izakaya (check my visit to Guu with Garlic and Wanoma ), my expectations were all over the place. Oh, well, I was about to find out!

Salumi Challenge

by KimHo on December 30, 2009 under: Comments,Random,Restaurant,Travel

Some time ago, fellow blogger Sherman visited Salumi, a well known deli in Seattle, and his post was received in a negative way. In an unfortunate way, Sherman’s recent post of Finch’s revived that topic which resulted in further negative feedback.

I have met Sherman personally for some time, consider him a friend, and have learned how he assesses a restaurant. We have agreed a lot of times (something we both think is scary) and, every single time we disagree, we understand why we disagreed. Because of this, it is safe for me to say that I can trust his judgment most of the time.

So why I bring this up? In a couple of weeks, I will be travelling to SeaTac for other reasons and, on my way back to Vancouver, I will try to stop at Salumi to confirm/deny Sherman’s originally thoughts. One of the main points of contention was that of the sampled sandwich, i.e., instead of being made to order, it was already pre-made. So, my challenge to you is the following: Which sandwich I should order? At almost $10 a sandwich, I am willing to buy at most two (most likely eat half and half on the spot and bring home the rest). In the Salumi post, two sandwiches were mentioned: mole salami and fresh mozzarella. Are these two an accurate representation? If not, what are your thoughts? Deadline for this post will be Jan 17th!

Update – Just came back from my trip. Yup, I “cheated” on the date! Salumi post coming soon, hehehehe.

House of Dosas

It was one of those late nights where I am driving through Vancouver where that usual question pops… Hungry, food… Where??? By sheer coincidence, I was in Kingsway when I remember a restaurant said to be open 24 hours. Whether that is actually true or not I did not double check; but I was hungry and it was open when I arrived. That was good enough for me!

Knight and Day

I am sure that some of you who visit this blog comes with the expectation of finding information about restaurants. With a similar line of thought, I do that “research” by visiting other fellow bloggers sites – just check my blogroll to the right for places I visit. While I am sure we will focus more often on recommended places or those where we have a positive feedback, there is also the negative one… How so? For some reason, Sherman (of Sherman’s Food Adventures) kept telling me “Don’t go to ABC or Knight and Day” and instead of me avoiding it completely, it was like that proverbial moth to a flame… Yup, it means I went to Knight and Day!

Score on Davie

There was I again on the look for good eats. Sure, there are still a lot of restaurants in the Robson and Denman area I haven’t visited yet but, for some other reasons, some of these places, well, I am not that interested in going. Milestone’s? Cactus Club? Bread Garden? The list is still somewhat long but time will tell… :)

For today’s post, it is about a burger place in Davie. While I had known of its existence, I haven’t visited it previously because… Well, there was no reason! It is just that I completely overlook it. Most likely because I do not walk to this area from English Bay; rather, I take one of the side streets from Robson street. However, I have sort of a reason why I ended up to Score: I was looking for Sushi Sky but it was closed. Why Sushi Sky. Ask Mijune! Anyway, not wanting to walk back and forth, I said to myself, oh, well, there is Score on Davie…

After the hard drive of my main computer died two weeks ago, I spent some time working off my backup/traveller computer. While it was workable, it simply does not have the apps I need. After going back and forth, I finally got a replacement hard drive (though technically, it is not a replacement at the same time; won’t go into details). The “catch” was that I had to go to Richmond and, after picking up my hard drive, I was looking for a spot for lunch. One place I wanted to go for some time, specially after some raving from some fellow bloggers, was G-Men Ramen. OK, since I was in Richmond, I might as well make the best out of it!

I think I am starting a tradition here, hehehehe. Similar to last year (here and here), I went to Van Dusen Botanical Garden again this year for the Festival of Lights. Below is my photo essay. And, of course, Merry Christmas to everybody!
