Roxy Burger on Urbanspoon

Last week, I blogged about the Santa Claus Parade. Of course, being an event that occurs around noon means I would either eat before or after it. In this case, it was before. The question was… Where? While Granville Street is known as the Entertainment District, at noon, right now, it is almost a bare street. Sure, there are your pubs but it lacked that “ambiance” associated to this area. While doing a quick walk, I remembered a place I meant to go: Roxy Burger. Well, that resolves the dilemma!

I was able to secure one of the tables closest to the window; actually I wanted another table but, alas, it was taken. The rest of the restaurant? Mostly empty. I guess even if you are not taking pictures, most people end up taking those tables. Darn… Now, normally, an empty restaurant usually raise flags but, then again, it was the day of the parade.

Christmas decorations were up!

Once seated, I started to browse their menu. They had the usual pub fare: burgers, other sandwiches, other to share dishes and so on. But, given I was by myself meant I had to order the dish of this place’s namesake: their Roxy Burger. But, wait, that is, in a way, their “standard” burger. Instead, I ended up going for “The Canadian Roxy Burger”, which has “Our huge 8oz Pattie of certified Angus Steak, topped with crisp bacon and cheddar cheese. Homemade mayo, ketchup and mustard”. And here it is:

Yup, this is a case were good lightning rule! :) Now, the question is… What’s the deal with that pickle? I wonder if they noticed I had a camera and wanted to decorate it a little bit more than usual. I guess I should come back some other day to find out. Anyway, it came with a side of fries which I won’t comment much about – it was your basic fries.

The cheese was already melted and almost “integrated” into the beef patty so I won’t say it added much. Heck, I don’t recall anything about it! The bacon, on the other hand, did add a slight smoky flavour, not to mention crispiness. Yeah, finally somebody who does not make soggy bacon! On the second picture, it seems the bread deflated. No, it just happened that I pressed a bit too hard to “cut” the sandwich so I could take a picture of the inside. Otherwise, the bread was average mass produced like. Finally, as for the meat patty. I won’t say it was the best, I won’t say it was the worst. There was some charring on it but was not overcooked. It somehow managed to retain some juices and, in an interesting way, you could actually taste the beef!

I finished the burger in almost no time not because I was in a hurry (I wasn’t) but because I actually wanted to eat it. It is one of those cases where your “average” product was executed correctly and you simply can’t help it. Would I come back? While it takes the same niche market as White Spot and their chef inspired Legendary Burgers , still , I have to admit Roxy made something good. As a result, if I am in the area and want burgers, that is a good option.

Yah, I’ve always wondered about this place. Looks decent and yes, the patty does looked to be cooked quite nicely. The bun does look soft, I actually like that. I’ve haven’t had a burger lately. I guess it’s time to have one!

I agree with all the above. I’m with you on the soft bun Sherman. While it’s nice if the interior has a bit of toastiness just so the it doesn’t absorb the sauces instantly, it’s better to be soft, than feel like it’s cutting your mouth. Especially with a burger, which IMO is meant to be eaten in big bites, not dainty ones.

Was it the bacon or cheese that made it Canadian Kim?

I’ve also always wondered about this place. I’ve never gone in because of it’s connections to the nightclub and I don’t want to hang out with cougars!

Anita, I didn’t pay attention to that but you are right!

Sherman, what?! You haven’t had burgers in a while? Unfortunately, I think I have one too many in the last couple of weeks!

Raidar, no idea what makes it “Canadian”. I mean, the bacon isn’t even back bacon! Because it was cooked in Canada? :)

Kate, well, it is only related by name (I think). I won’t worry too much about it.

Tia, thanks for the suggestion. Sherman, should you have these instead of the regular burger? Hehehehehe
