I will admit something: The reason I did not write any posts on Saturday and Sunday was to “enjoy” the Olympic activites (after escaping first for some lunch in Langley). While I did go to Vancouver Downtown, it took me less than an hour to suffer from an Olympic Games burnout. I mean, it is enjoyable to see so many people in the Downtown area but, in my case, I can only take that much. As a result, I decided to skip my weekend post. Whether I keep on visiting the other exhibits and pavilions… Well, to a certain extent, that remains to be seen. In the meantime, enjoy!
Now, so far all the places I have been are mostly Canadian. So, for a break, I convinced some work colleagues to go to a place near our workplace, specifically, Saxony House, located in the entrace of Stanley Park. It was a short walk from our office (though, my definition of “short walk” is somewhat skewed) on a sunny winter day… (Note, this post has one reference that might not be suitable to certain ages or may offend some. You have been warned!)
Oh, once again, all my other posts this topic before continuing!:
- Alberta House
- Robson Street
- Maison du Québec
- Saskatchewan Pavilion
- LiveCity Downtown/Canada Pavilion
- Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games – Northern House

Since we knew it would open at 12:00 p.m., we targeted to be there at that time. Little we know others had the same idea! When we were about 400 metres away, we saw this long line outside. NOOOOOO!!!! Another long line!!! Fortunately, it started to move soon after: it seems they weren’t letting people in until the food was partially there. And talking about food…

On their menu.
- Traditional grilled sausage from the Ore Mountains ($9)
- Marinated pork steak ($12)
- Ardapperlklitscher – potato patties with apple puree ($8)
- Buttermilk getzen – traditional sweet bake of sour milk and potato with blueberry ($8)
OK, here is the “not suitable” joke. Another colleague of mine went there the previous day so I asked her about the menu. Her response was on the lines of “sausage, sausage and more sausage. Think of a sausage fest”. Of course, that does not help when it is a group of all guys who goes together for something like this… So, to “break” that mold, I did not order *ahem* sausage as the rest but went for the pork steak.

By the look of their faces, my colleagues enjoyed their *ahem* sausages so I will leave it there. As for myself, the pork steak was quite juicy and seasoned perfectly. Fortunately, the bread soak most of the juices and spare me of a mess while eating it.

Since I was in charge of doing the food ordering (they went to get beer), I went ahead and ordered the two other dishes. Sorry about the picture of the getzen: we were eating inside and lightning conditions were terrible. I wished I could have taken the picture outside under the sun but, alas, everybody was standing outside (yes, all the tables were taken!). Anyway, as for the taste, the combination of potato and apple was quite odd for me. Think of a hash brown and then some acidity and sweetness from the apple. Some extra seasoning would have helped but, otherwise, this odd combination worked for me. The getzen was to plain for my liking (not even some hints of sourness as suggested in its name) and the blueberry did not help much (I guess, since it is not blueberry season, there will be compromises).

Did I mention beer? Did I mention view? Now, I don’t know how this one compares to German Fan Fest near Waterfront Station but, needless to say, beer was flowing on this side and people were having fun. They also had desserts but I wasn’t too keen to have some sweets. Past that, the food was too pricey in my books. Even in comparison, while I was in Maison du Quebec, their meat pie was $12 and I had almost a whole meal. Sure, there is a great view but I can get the same view had I gone to a Subway or to Safeway, grab a sandwich and seat on a bench nearby. Had the food been a couple of $$$ cheaper, I might have enjoyed it more. Alas…
