Once again, continuing with my series of places to visit/events/pavilions during this Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, today, Maison du Québec or Quebec House. Located between Russky Dom (aka, Telus World of Science, aka, Science World) and BC Place, next to this area are also Sask Pavilion and Ontario House. However, because of the long lines, I chose to go this one first… Well, let’s just say that all the lines were deceiving, it took me almost an hour from queueing up to sitting on a table! (However, that is not that bad, considering that the line for the Rusky Dom was circling the nearby area and towards the nearby parkade!). Anyway, here is Maison du Québec!
For other posts of this serie…
- Alberta House
- Robson Street
- Saskatchewan Pavilion
- LiveCity Downtown/Canada Pavilion
- Saxony House
- Northern House

Now, here is a small pet peeve. While queueing there was one staff member at the end of the line with a speaker telling everybody the food wasn’t free (not that I was expecting it to be), still when people finally got “in”, they were disappointed with an empty stage and just the “restaurant” and a stand with microbrewery. Of course, my expectations are different than most people but, remember, this is not an expo or some sort of free for all fair where you get everything for free! Back to this post…
Another thing most people did not notice was a sign telling everybody the schedule of events. I arrived ~14:15 and left just before 15:00. Why this is important? Had I left earlier, I won’t have seen the artist on stage as seen in the picture above. Now, the picture is not flattering but she had a really beautiful voice…
Did I mention microbreweries? For good (or for bad), I wasn’t in drinking mood so I skipped these.
The menu. No, I know the last one does not look very well but taking pictures of a monitor/TV sucks at times. But, if you click on it to see the larger version, you should be able to see it. Now, here is a big problem with the menu…. One key dish is missing!!! There is no poutine!!!! (According to a tweet from Jessica of Yum-O-Rama, it seems they were served after 3:00 p.m. ARGH!!!!).
One of the items of the menu in the fridge. Had I been with somebody, chances are I would have ordered cheese.
Soupe aux pois jaunes, au jambon et au lard salé de Beauce or yellow pea, ham & salted Beauce lard. Hmmmmm…. Lard! I have mentioned this before and I am going to say it again, I am a sucker for legumes, that is why I ordered this soup. It was quite a good soup, though, at times, I prefer a thicker version. Still, I enjoyed it.
Tourtière du Lac-Saint-Jean, ketchup vert, salade de betteraves marinèes or Lac-St-Jean meat pie, green ketchup & marinated beets. I know some of you might be twitching by the description of the dish (I just called it “meat pie”). Beets? Green ketchup (which, by the way, is in the closed container)? Actually both were good; in the case of the beets, some sweetness and the green ketchup was acidic. As for the pie itself, I thought the meat could have been better (as in more tender) but, then again, if we look at it from a historic perspective, it worked fine to me.
On another night, I was in the area again and couldn’t help take a picture of that “cube” at night. So, from a food perspective, it is still good but, if it is true that there is poutine after 3:00 p.m., I guess I have to come back just to try it!

I enjoyed the french onion soup and sugar tart. The onion soup was good on a cold rainy day and the tart was outstanding. I could go back just for the tart.
Holly, on certain nights, there is no queue so that sounds like a good option.I also found out that menu could change; for example, I was told there was poutine on Sunday. Argh! >_<
If you go back, you might want to get a nice white scarf if they have any left. I was craving for poutine afterwards, but I was too cheap to pay for $5 fries at Ontario House, so I just went to Costco for a large portion of poutine.
Holly, do you mean this?
