All of us are always looking for a good deal and, in the case of us food bloggers, nothing beats a cheap good meal. Be it ridiculous portions or ridiculous price, we have to try it once. But, given there is always balance in things, have those criteria mean *something* will take a hit. According to Sherman, Po King, a Cantonese in Kingsway, is one of those places, where the food is decent, portions are big, the room looks nice but there is something that makes him not recommend it. Since going to a dim sum place by yourself is the equivalent of going to a gunfight with a sword, I checked with Elaine (of Parker Pages) if she and Chris would be game to visit it (in a way, also to test their luck on getting a table in such places!).

After yet another errand in South Burnaby, I was looking for places to eat late night. While driving through Kingsway, I was looking for alternatives to Green Bamboo so I was hoping for Vietnamese. I was aware of two of them (Pho Hoa and Pho Hong), they were still several clicks away. But then I spotted Pho Saigon. I have passed by a lot of times and, for some reason, it looks more like a run down house but, with cars parked outside and people inside, I guess it is still a restaurant…

For the most part, I have been blogging restaurants in Vancouver, Burnaby, New Westminster and Richmond (*shakes fist!!!*). Once in a while, I go outside those boundaries but those instances are far and in between. In a wacky way, I thought I should start visiting those areas and, for my first visit, a restaurant that Sherman has enthusiastically suggested: Rehanah’s Roti. Caribbean food in Port Moody? Hey, it works for me!

McDonald’s McMini

What?! Another McDonald’s post? (previous ones include s’mores pie, breakfast sandwich and Crème Brûlée McFlurry). OK, I am not the biggest McDonald’s fan and, despite all the bashing given to them (at times, me included), unfortunately, it has its place in society. Hell, in Vancouver’s food blogger scene, courtesy of Sherman, we even have a phrase referencing to McDonald’s! (Whenever a restaurant, specially fine dining, serves a meal that leaves you still hungry, it is called a “Filet-o-Fish Meal”, as you would most likely drop by for that sandwich afterwards). Now, whether you like it or not, it does not matter, somebody will (I actually their soft serve are quite interesting). So, why this post? Well, blame Mijune! The other day, she wrote this tweet:

I just drove by a McDonald’s and they have McMini’s!! What are those!? They look like half a burger not a mini burger though!

Not that different from that time where I went to pick up some s’mores pie, I decided to go this time for some McMini!

In the last couple of weeks, it seems I have been forcing myself into restaurants that have had an “opening soon” sign hanging outside. OK, I am exaggerating. In one of the failed attempts to go to Gyuu Don Ya, I mentioned to PO there was another nearby restaurant I wanted to visit; however, it had also a serie of issues before opening. That restaurant is today’s post Corner Suite Bistro Deluxe.

Delicias de Alicia

I have complained a lot of times in the past that we do not have non-Mexican, Latin American eateries. While you have gems like El Pulgarcito, El Inka Deli (here and here), i.e., given the large land mass that is Latin American, these restaurants are just a spec of what that part of the world has to offer. Of course, me being raised in one of those small regions, makes me crave that food in a way quite different from the usual Vancouverite. Try cooking it myself? Well, I wish… Unfortunately, I didn’t really learn… So, when I found out Delicias de Alicia (literally, Alicia’s Delight) opened, I was more than excited to give it a try.

Gyuu Don Ya

There has been times when I think we food bloggers are a dedicated group – a bit too dedicated at times. Like driving to +50 Km just for pizza or doing some cross border bakery delivery. Of course, these are long trips and, to prevent unnecessary frustrations, you would usually check if they are open and when they are open. But, how about a restaurant that was still under construction before the biggest party in Vancouver in recent history? I mean, given all the business opportunities during this time, would you try to make sure you would be open on time? In an odd way, that seemed to be the case with Gyuu Don Ya, the newest Japanese restaurant in the 500 block of Robson, which, culinary-wise ,one of the most interesting blocks in Downtown Vancouver, as it includes Falafel Maison, Viet Sub, Matoi Sushi, H-Mart, Beard’s Papa and so on.
