On Tuesday’s “bonus” post, I showed some pictures of “interesting” dishes and hinted they will be for next week. I am sure some of you suspect what is coming but (and probably) overstating the obvious, yes, I was out of town. OK, let me rephrase that: I was out of the country/North America. But, as usual, there is that “last meal” concept, a place you might want to visit before leaving town. In my case, there was no particular reason for going out and getting something to eat (which, by now is not necessarily and excuse). Instead, I was too lazy to do dishes and throw the garbage afterwards… So, in this instance of laziness, I chose to visit one place that I suggested Anita the day we ended up going to Burgoo: The One Restaurant (TOR), which is a fork of a Burnaby favourite – Lao Shan Dong (LSD). The question is of course whether it lives up to its roots…

This was supposed to be two short post but I thought, rather than two short posts, how about having a longer one, specially considering these two places shared some things in common? Namely, me needing a meal; however, I wasn’t THAT hungry? OK, that might be an overstatement… Basically, I had a somewhat heavy meal earlier that day and needed a snack/light meal. And based on posts from other fellow bloggers, I thought I should drop by Huaxi Noodle (in Crystal Mall’s food court) and Chong Lee Market…

If you have been following Anita‘s tweets, you will find out she is going through a “foodie nightmare” right now. As a friend, I checked with her if she was up to a “last meal” before she started that procedure. She was good but, the usual question popped: Where? I provided several options, including Zakkushi and The One. In the end, we ended up going to Burgoo. After all, comfort food, right!

This is a bit of a “bonus” post. Today’s regular post is below.

To those not “old” enough might not get the joke behind the title of this post. It is one of the most memorable quotes from Crocodile Dundee. Or, just to refresh your memory, check this clip:

So, what this has to do with food? You will understand once you click on read more below. But, before that, a special thanks to jlomein, Jettie, Jose, fellow blogger timetochow who have been commenting in my Delicias de Alicia and Guantanamera Restaurant and Bar posts. So, without further ado…

Darya Restaurant

I have walked Robson, Denman and Davie Street so many times that, for the most part, I am aware of all the restaurants. Or so I thought. When I was walking back one day from English back to work, I noticed a restaurant just off Denman that, last time I remembered, was a Chinese restaurant. I guess it went under and now a Middle Easter/Persian restaurant – Darya Restaurant. Since I had lunch already, I put that in my lunch to visit queue. That opportunity came a couple of weeks ago and, as it has been a lot of times already in my lunches on work days, PO was tagging along.

The Lion’s Den Cafe

Not sure where the idea came originally. It might be thanks to a comment from jlomein in my Delicias de Alicia post or probably because he wanted to go there from the very beginning but Karl organized a mini-gathering of sorts in The Lion’s Den Cafe. Originally, it was supposed to be Sherman, Karl and myself; however, since Jessica joined us last time in Royal City Thai, we thought we should check on her as well. And, guess what? Elaine asked if we were up for lunch on the same day and we told her of our plans. Result? An additional person in this mini-gathering!

Of course, it begs the question: what is so particular about Lion’s Den? Well, it has Caribbean food! Wait, that is not all… How about Japanese food as well? Yup, Lion’s Den has both Caribbean AND Japanese in the same menu! (Or, as they call it “Japaribbean”). With such odd combination, one of them quite popular in Vancouver, the question is how well would both combine…

Update: below are the links for everybody’s posts!

This is the third part of my series on what I have learned all these years taking pictures. As mentioned, in my previous two post, these are the planned topics:

Once again, this is about what I have learned by taking pictures in the last couple of years and, by no mean, is a replacement for formal education from a professional. This is very important in this post because it brings the one issue with photography that makes or break a picture: composition. Yes, no matter how proficient you are with some apps *cough*Photoshop*cough*, you need that initial picture to begin with.
