Vancouver Alpen Club Deutsches Haus
4875 Victoria Drive
Vancouver, BC

Once again, it was time for a food bloggers gathering! It seems with each new one, we have more and more joining us. I do apologize for readers for finding over a dozen (!) or so posts from different bloggers on the same day about the same restaurant, please, let us once in a while (as in every other month!) be selfish and have one where we all sit together in the same table and break bread together.

This is the exterior picture last time I was here.
This time, it was Deutsches Haus in the Vancouver Alpen Club, located in Victoria Drive and 33rd. I have been once (previous post, here – warning, poor pictures!) in the past but Karl suggested we should go there as a group in the Maple Grill dinner. Hey, do we really need an excuse to get together and eat?
So, with that in mind, I set up an invitation to fellow bloggers with the opportunity to invite others whom I excluded from the list. And, indeed, additional guests were invited! So, here are the bloggers in attendance:
- Anita – La Petite Foodie
- Ann and Dee – Me Plus Food, post here!
- Ethan – Tastes Better with Friends (who was invited by Victoria)
- Jenny – My Secret Eden, post here!
- Jessica – Yumorama
- Jonathan – Food and Tell
- Joyce – Vancouver Foodies, post here!
- Karl – The Friday Lunch, post here!
- Sherman – Sherman’s Food Adventures, post here!
- Victoria – Victoria’s Food Secrets, post here!
- Yen – OMNOMics, post here!
Unfortunately, Mijune and Elaine had to cancel a last moment. I will have to say some of them were eager to meet you two…
While everybody was free to order any dish he/she found interesting, I needed some volunteers to order one “dish” with me: the festplatte. Or, as listed in their menu, “1 eisbein, 2 kassler, 2 bratwurst, 2 leberkäse, 1 schweineschnitzel, mashed potatoes, dumplings, red cabbage, sauerkraut. $80. (serves four people – 30min)“. No, this is not an eating competition where we had to eat it in 30 minutes but the time it takes to prepare this. There were some (won’t be mentioned to protect the innocent/guilty, hehehehe) decided to order separately, most of us seemed to agree with the idea. Given the amount of people, we divided ourselves in small pockets and share this monstrosity. As in this monstrosity…
Oh, wait, of course, after we ordered, there will be some drinks and bread first, right?

Now, some were not that keen for the festplatte, so they decided to order individually. These dishes include (sorry, didn’t catch the names so you will have to check their individual posts).

Finally, let’s try again, the festplatte… This monstrosity!

Here is the breakdown of the components of this plate.

Red cabbage

Mashed potato

Potato dumpling

Hot mustard

Leberkäse

Kassler

Bratwurst

Schnitzel on pork hock/eisbein

Schnitzel

Pork hock/eisbein

Pork hock/eisbein

Sauerkraut

Cut of pork hock/eisbein
If I had to put them in order, I would go (credit to Mijune for her “bullet” point system, hehehehe):
- Eisbein: Pork hock. C’mon, it is pork! Do I need to say anything else???
At first we thought it was mostly a boiled piece but it kept its pork goodness. - Schewineschitzel: Despite its looks, it was still a juicy most piece of meat. Nicely breaded.
- Bratwurst: In a way, it was average. Not that different from the wurst you can get from Freybee’s.
- Red cabbage/sauerkraut: They were well done, but slightly bland.
- Leberkäse: Tasted like smoked chops. It was OK, not much to comment about.
- Mashed potatoes: not a big fan but it was OK.
- Kassler: To paraphrase Karl, think bologna or spam.
- (Potato) dumplings: Man, these were bad. It tasted as if they were fried in old oil (and stuck!)
After this heavy meal, in part due to me being seated in one side of the table with Yen, Jessica and Sherman to share the festplatte, meaning two light eaters for this large plate which resulted in me being the “finisher”, it was the question… Does anybody want dessert? Sherman balked at that idea and the rest.. Well… I said, OK, I am willing to give it a try to anything so..

Apple strudel (Apfelstrudel)

Crepe with ice cream
Actually, I did not order the apple strudel; that was Karl and Jonathan so I can’t say for certain how it was. As for the crepe, I guess I shouldn’t order a more “French” dessert than a Austrian/German one in this type of restaurant. While the crepe was crispy, the ice cream was melted and it was a mess to eat. Nothing too exciting.
In the end, the food was decent. Heavy on meats but, as mentioned in my initial visit to Deutsches Haus, it is something you would expect in this type of restaurants. Probably not for everybody, specially if you happen to be a vegetarian. The fact that service was sparse does not help if you are looking forward to that. In our case, our main intent was to gather on the same table with other fellow bloggers and with that in mind, the Deutsches Haus served its purpose.
Finally, to close this post, have you ever wondered what happens when we food bloggers get together and food is brought up to the table???

Kim, thanks again for organizing! Also, now that I see your list of people, I see I need to add to mine! Oops.
I also ordered the apple strudel, and it was also not great – sounds like the desserts were a bit of a miss.
haha… i LOVE the last picture. attack!! instead of bread, i think you should have received big, soft pretzels with mustard. mmm…
Thanks again Kim for organizing. Yah, nice last pic… Hahaha…
Hilarious, the last picture says it all!
thanks Kim for organizing, it was a great night despite the lack of service. The last picture is a classic, so typical of food bloggers LOL
Yah, Jenny, the service was indifferent wasn’t it?
The festplatte seems very unique and tasty! Though I’m not a meat person, it sure looks mouth-watering! Aw, how can you guys tolerate the steamy fragrant while taking photos? Lol! But I can see that you guys really had fun fun flashing around! It makes me looking forward to the next gathering even more! XD
Victoria, well, I am not a desserts person so your thoughts echoes it better than me!
Trisha, come to think about it, in my previous visit, there wasn’t pretzels either. Probably they don’t do pretzels at all…
Sherman, hey, you set up high standards, this was just my feeble attempt to overdo you!
Holly, to tell you the truth, I really wanted to take that one for semi-obvious reasons, hehehehe
Jenny, it will be your turn next time!
Eudora, next time… Next time!
Hey, I didn’t know about this meetup!
TS, when I set up the original invite, your name must have slipped through the cracks… Sorry!!!
This comment might be out of place but I notice, when you have bloggers’ meets, Chowtimes is not in attendance and vice-versa. (Im talking about Kim and Sherman.).
Unreal. That last images would frighten any resto owner…..like a red carpet event with some celebreties…
Food looks good. You mixed up the Kassler with the Leberkaese. Kassler Rippchen are smoked and brined.
Leberkaese, when good, is my fav snack back home inside a bun with sweet mustard. But yes, even my darling wife’s first comment (years ago) was, “looks like a piece of Spam…”

I’ve been to several things with Ben, including the thing at Tang Thai that he set up. I’ve invited him to all the things I organize, so I’m not sure why this has anything to do with me specifically…
Im sorry I guess Im just being too nosy.
@Jonnek
Blogging is serious business.
I think it’s more so the fact that Kim has lapses in his memory, he forgets people from time to time. He forgot eatingclub this time
. Just joooooking!
Yah, eating_club Vancouver was pissed! LOL…
Jonnek, chances are what Kevin said… Wait, who is Kevin again?
Kevin… Who are you again?
Sherman, in my defence, I am not sure if TS would have gone east of some Vancouver streets anyway… (though she did once go to Burnaby for El Inka Deli)
Victoria’s not far. Been to several places thereabouts. I even went to Burnaby (recently)! You know how *that* is no man’s land ;P Anyway, there is more concentration of good places in East Van. You’re just being exclusive. =P
Kevin??? Kevin’s been MIA for so long… I need to refresh my memory…
TS, OK, guilty as charged, then…
Jenny, in theory, is in charge of the next one so I guess she already knows…
I’d just like to add one more point as well. As much as we’d like to invite everyone everytime, that is logistically impossible. There are 50+ prominent food bloggers in town (that also explains why we rarely invite readers, cuz imagine the amount of people). I mean someone can ask why Raul, Karen or Rebecca aren’t invited to all the meetups as well. I’m sure they are really nice people as well; but, it’s not feasible to be inclusive with everyone each and every time. I’m sure Ben would agree with that. Even he had a tough time organizing the meetup at Long’s cuz he couldn’t include everyone. The organizer never can win. When I did the meetup at Alvin Garden, I was so worried that some people would have their feelings hurt if I didn’t invite them. Well, after awhile, I can’t worry about that cuz it’ll be the case every time. As a result, there will be several sub-groups of bloggers. And honestly, I’m pretty sure everyone is okay with that since they probably share the same sentiments. Just like friendships, no one hangs around 100+ ppl all the time. You usually settle in with a smaller group of people. Therefore, it has nothing to do with anything else really. So it is what it is…
@Sherman
What! I thought everyone hung out with 100+ friends at a time… guess that’s just me.
Joking aside, what Sherman said is completely true and I couldn’t have said it any better. Things just happen and that’s how it is..
@ TS, oh boo you you saw me at dodgeball for photo week
.
@ Kim, what. Yea I’ve been gone for a while…I’m sure you all missed me.
who’s who in that pic. and thanks for the heads up re this restaurant, I have a weakness for schnitzel so will check this place out, very very soon! i can feel my cholestrol rising just gawking at the pics but you only live once!
sgtoca, sorry, there is a reason why I blurred the pictures!
Okay, okay.. I will try my best not to forget anyone, especially TS
Since I haven’t seen Kevin for awhile, I will most likely forget him.. just kidding ;P
