A couple of weeks ago, I visited Delicias de Alicia for some Cuban food. I really wanted to like the restaurant, given the lack of such restaurant types in Vancouver but, in the end, I thought it failed to deliver. In the comments for that post, reader yoyo mentioned a new Cuban restaurant in the New Westminster area. So, to show some love to that part of Metro Vancouver, for the third time this week, I went to Guantanamera Restaurant and Bar.

European Deli

In general, I try to be as responsible as possible when it comes to timing. Now, that does not mean I will be perfect; there will be times I will slip. When it comes to work, despite I have flex time, I am usually there past my usual required work hours (though, that might actually “mean” flex time, as in anytime before 9:00 a.m., and anytime after 5:00 p.m….). As for appointments, something similar: if I have an appointment at 11:00 a.m., I try to be there by 10:55 a.m. This is quite unlike some culture I am aware of where, if you say 11:00 a.m., people believe you actually mean 11:30 a.m….

On one day, I had a doctor appointment for 11:00 a.m. I usually avoid these hours because, well, it means I have to take an early break. However, to make up for that time, I started really early that day. Fortunately, that doctor’s appointment was relatively fast and, rather than go back to work directly, I decided to have an early lunch. Looking for places in Davie Street, I saw the usual suspects and after walking some streets, I was almost resigned to places I have been several times in the past. However, that’s when I noticed European Deli and its note of selling deli sandwiches…

Tenhachi Japanese Restaurant

Tenhachi Japanese Restaurant on Urbanspoon

I will be straight to the point: For the third straight post, this dinner has something related to Sherman. “WTF, AGAIN??? What is the deal with you two?”. If you ever get to meet Sherman long enough, you will find out he is a great guy. And because he participates in different sport leagues, as mentioned in yesterday’s Pattaya Thai post, since his team won, it meant they would be playing one extra game, which translates into one extra opportunity to go out to eat. Given that I was with his hockey team the previous night at Pattaya Thai, hey, why not! So he checked with me if I wanted to go to Tenhachi for the after game meal.

Pattaya Thai

It makes me wonder at times what is the general perception of the general readership about blogs. This is specially considering when I was personally attacked in two posts because my “lack of knowledge” on the subject. The funny thing is that I have never claimed expertise! (Even funnier is the fact some points in the comments are plain incorrect). Of course, that does not give me a free pass to freely say what I want, instead, I want readers to held me accountable, as I have mentioned previously. Of course, as long as you don’t go calling names, everything is fair game. With that in mind, that brings the question, what are the standards of printed publications? For example, when Karl wrote about Pattaya Thai, an editor from a local magazine attacks him. I have know Karl for some time and, while we might disagree on some things, I will have to also say he has really interesting insight and opinions about the food – and I respect him for that. But, still I knew I had to visit this restaurant and find out by myself what is so “special” about it. And that opportunity came when Sherman‘s hockey team (who, other than “Gadget Girl”, I won’t even try to list their names, on that note, Sherman’s post is here!) went there one night and checked with me to see if I wanted to tag along.

New Westminster… A part of Metro Vancouver with its own pocket of interesting places. In the last week or so, I have been going to some restaurants in the area, somehow starting with Royal City Thai, which was blogged two weeks ago. This time, King Sushi, a sushi restaurant in Sixth Street based on a suggestion from Sherman. Would it be another good eats or a flop? One way to find out!

“You Have 0 Friends”

(The original post of my Taking Pictures of Food series was supposed to be up for today; however, due to other circumstances, I had to reschedule it. Instead, thanks to some odd timing, I wanted to address something else…).

A lot of people might miss the point of the name of this post – that will be specially true if you do not watch South Park. The episode of two weeks ago (aka, episode 199, aka episode 1404), brought the topic of virtual friends and, well, let’s just say I am not necessarily that interested in that concept. At this point, I am sure some of you might be thinking “WTH you are talking about?!” Before anybody starting bringing some (virtual?) pitchforks and decide to stop reading this blog, please, let me elaborate…

Late night eats… While I am no Sherman when it comes to eating at certain times of the day (or the night), when push comes to shove, well, I am willing to try anything. One night, I was in East Vancouver and decided to drive to Commercial Drive for good eats. Unfortunately, most of the places were already closed or close to closing (unlike previous instances, this was drawing closer to 11:00 p.m. already) so I was hesitant on the options remaining. That is until I drove past Brado…
