Delicious BBQ (Crystal Mall) on Urbanspoon

The truth is that this week could have been Kingsway (Burnaby side) week. That’s because, originally, all posts would have been in this area and, two of them of similar cuisine, namely, Vietnamese. To avoid that burning sense, I added Akira Sushi and, to further shuffle sense, tomorrow’s post will be Nimby Burger. However, I still needed a post for today. While I have some materials in the queue, I still had to go through the post-processing process, etc. etc. So, in the end, I decided to use of of those originally scheduled posts… ^_^;;;

On Tuesday’s post, I mentioned I visited Crystal Mall and, again, in a pseudo back-to-back type visit, I went to another stand. This time, rather than noodles or burgers, I went for some straight Chinese goodness: siu mei or roasted/BBQ meats. In this case, Delicious BBQ. Considering they have some interesting competition in the form of Top King (in the market level) and another stand in the other side of the food court (which name escapes me right now), I thought it would be an interesting experience. Furthermore, there is still places in (gasp!) Richmond like HK BBQ Master! But, I was in Burnaby so Delicious BBQ it was!

Delicious BBQ, Crystal Mall, Burnaby

I arrived close to 7:00 p.m. which means it wasn’t far away from their closing time. As seen in the picture above, which was taken after my meal, there weren’t almost any meats left. That, in a way, it is a good thing: if feel almost everything prepared for the day was sold, hence, no “leftovers” for the following day! Furthermore, while waiting for my order, I noticed in the back some blown fowl (most likely duck) hanging, as if they were preparing it for the following day. Hmmmmmm… duck… :) Anyway, there was no time for me to just stare and instead made my order before somebody else jumped ahead and order the last remaining pieces. Among all the options available, I went for a quasi-one-size-fits-all approach: order the one that has the most meats! In this case…

3 types of meat on rice and, for an additional $0.75 (though they only charged me $0.50), a big bowl of broth. Now, let’s go through the broth first: it is not that much a heavy soup but mostly water boiled with some bones (to extract all the meat taste) and some gourd/melon. It had a really mellow taste but it didn’t matter that much: its intent wasn’t that much of a soup but to complement the meats and rice. And talking about rice…

The rice is your average rice so not much to say nor any complains. The “juices” they used on the top of the meats drizzled down to the rice and gave some savoury taste rather than the flat white rice taste. And, finally, moving to the meats!

For my three meats, I went for duck, roasted pork and char siu pork. The duck was quite boney and fatty but, the truth is, while meat is good, the better part is from the skin with the fat and when you suck the bones. It was a bit saltier than expected but, otherwise, it worked well. As for the roasted pork, I was given a somewhat fatty portion, which might not work with everybody. The skin, though, it was pork crackling heaven goodness. Finally, the cha siu pork… Out of the three, this was the one that let me down somewhat. It was cooked well, alright; however, the sweetness I would expect from this type of siu mei wasn’t there. I mean, it was good in its own ways but it could have been better.

While the description above sounds good; however, the execution was far from perfect. My main issue with is the portion. For $8.50, I would have expected something on the lines of what I got in HK BBQ Master. In a way, I wished for a bit more. Would I come back? May be. It has some redeeming qualities of its own but the main issue is that with some many (good?) options next to it, the question is whether I want this specifically.

Tried this place once, thought it was passable siu yuk but its been hard for me to like anywhere else besides HK BBQ Master and I sometimes do the crazy trek on the Canada Line from downtown to Richmond just to pick this up on my lunch time, quite a bit of a hustle due to time limits but so worth it as that crispy skin always satisfies! Good pics! I noticed both this place and HK BBQ only give one piece of lonesome brocolli which is both sad yet funny.

“suck the bone”??? That’s something I would say! LOL… Yah, I’m trying to work my way through Crystal Mall’s food court too. Some definite highs, but some lows as well…

I tried the roast pork and enjoyed their crackling skin, however my mother said that the meat lacked flavour.

So, HK BBQ master and Parker Place BBQ are still our favourites chinese bbq meat places.

There’s a bbq place on the corner of Kingsway and Joyce that is an ok substitute if we don’t want to drive all the way to you know where. It is also better than this place.

Kim,

I’m minutes from Xtal so I can attest to everything you said. I find it tough to stomach (no pun intended) $8.50 for a 3-meat rice combo that’s served to me in a styrofoam box, eaten with chopsticks the width of toothpicks.

Therefore when I’m at Xtal (2-3 times a month) I go get my BBQ combo at Top King downstairs in the market. 2-item rice combo is $6.50. No soup/broth. And I get a container of “guong chong yung” (ginger & onion paste) or two at no extra cost (have to ask niiiiicely). I never get 3 items because I prefer to focus on two meats, usually the ‘siu cheong’ (bbq sausage) and either ‘siu yook’ (roast pork) or ‘yeow gai’ (soy chicken). Their meats may be 85% of Delicious’ quality but I can live with that given a $2 difference.

Hmm, it’s 12:30 and I’m suddenly in the mood for BBQ ……

I agree with holly in that HK BBQ Master is still my favorite but richmond is too far for me so this place works for Burnaby… actually, I normally buy the charsiu whole, rather than cut up because I find that they slice it too thick for my liking, then I just slice it thinly at home :)

@Jacqueline
Funny, I always ask the bbq “si-fu” to cut charsiu as thin as possible for me !

LR,
as soon as I saw the post, I thought of you. LOL!. The last time I was at Xtal Mall, I took a look at the this stall and had to give it a pass. I did notice that the Butcher downstair had better value BBQ. Had like some pre-cut BBQ meat for like $6.50 in a styrofoam container. The roasted pork downstairs looked marginally better.
But as mentioned by others. I would save my BBQ cravings for the Ditchmond option. So when at Xtal i end up trying the other more ‘unique’ stalls.
BTW the ‘other stall’ had much poorer looking offerings. Cant imagine it could be better than the butcher or delicious. darn i am really hungry now…

sgtoca, the broccoli is the “token” piece of vegetable! :) I work in the West End so it takes way too much time for me to go to Richmond to go to HK BBQ Master. :(

Sherman, sorry, you don’t have exclusive priviledge of that! :P

Holly, I am not sure which one you are referring to… I think there is one in Wessex and Kingsway (the street parallel to Joyce) but, other than that one, I don’t recall any other. If you could tell me the exact address, I would appreciate it!

LotusRapper, note that my posts goes live either 12:01 a.m. or 1:01 a.m. (depending on daylight savings). I take no responsibilities if you are suddenly hungry! :D

Jacqueline, if you are not to eat it right away (in the next hour or so after it has been cut), I would have it uncut as well. But, unfortunately, that is seldom, if ever, the case! :D

TTC, I think the other stand does not look as good because they don’t seem to have a si-fu in store… I guess that is something that only Chinese people would catch, hehehehe.

@timetochow
It is true, the fattiness of the roast pork does remind a lot of people of me ……

Had dinner with Mr. Chowtimes tonight. Now I know who you are, hehe. And he needs to collect royalties on food blogs that use the term “chow” :-D

Tomorrow may be rou jia mo for me at Want Want at Xtal. May the Force be with me.

Oh sorry Kim,

As usual I got my directions all mixed up. It’s actually located in a chinese grocery store on the corner of Kingsway and Earles. I forgot the name of the store. It’s across from Harvey’s if that helps.

KH, yea you need a BBQ master to get the right chinese BBQ otherwise it is not the same. The other one sells other items on the menu either. But their BBQ items looks very sad. :-(

Holly, I remember that BBQ place on Kingsway/Earles. Was one of my fav place for BBQ duck. They occasionally had a fragrant marinated pei pah roast duck. The roastpork was good to0. Not sure if it is still the same regime or sifu. It was very good before. But that was at least 6 yeas ago since I’ve been there.

LR, it was because I have read your comments on the Xtal BBQ place, not as you suggested. Didn’t notice u being on the heavy side. Oh yes mr and mrs chowtimes can take as much royalty as they like. Even 100% of all earnings. Pay me with good food. I will be happy. the rjm is ok here. tooo much shredded lettuce. i think the o’tray’s(great flaky bun) and the RPM are much better. try the spicy beef(and offal) noodle if you havent already. I believe Ben, Dylan and Fmed all gave it a thumbs up. Personally I like Wang’s XLB’s.

14 LotusRapper May 28, 2010 at 9:59 pm

Went to Want Want today for lunch. *Finally* had the RJM. Woo-wee …. superb is all I can say. I’m salivating thinking about it.

I avoid XLB’s for lunch, you know why ? Unless I have a bib, I’m paranoid the juices would spray onto my shirt & tie, LOL. Silly ain’t it ?

15 holly May 29, 2010 at 8:25 am

@LotusRapper

The secret to eating XLB’s is to take a tiny bite and suck out the soup. Wah la, no mess. Or if you’re really hungry, eat the whole thing at one go, but watch out for that hot liquid.

BTW, what is a RJM?

16 KimHo May 29, 2010 at 8:43 am

Holly, rou jia mo, aka, RJM. That would be that “burger”/meat sandwich, Chinese style. That’s what I got in Beijing Restaurant – see picture above.

17 LotusRapper May 29, 2010 at 9:53 pm

BTW folks, yesterday while at Xtal, I noticed that small corner congee/noodles/rice stall (kitty corner to Northern Meixi) is now a “mah lah hot pot” place (mah lah means numbing spicy hot in Mandarin). Dunno if the owners are the same.
