To those who can only speak English, let me tell you: English is an odd language and can be twisted in really odd ways. From being a language where there are more exceptions than rules, to things times where spelling makes no sense (read vs read, in its present vs past tense), pronunciation isn’t straight forwards (tomato vs tomato) and where you can create words overnight, like malamanteau (and the hilarity it ensued afterwards). However, that does not mean I can’t use it in its own odd ways as well. A week or so ago, I wrote a tweet on the lines of (which I have deleted since):

“Getting messy with Five Guys”

Of course, I initially meant “Having a mess in Five Guys”, though, I knew that typing it differently would have raised a lot of eyebrows. But, then again, a lot of people don’t know/want to remember/are aware that “mess” can also refer to a meal, plus the fact that Five Guys was capitalized should have given a hint I was referring to something else, as in Five Guys Burgers and Fries. Of course, at times, being politically correct detracts from some jokes… Anyway, back to the restaurant and food theme, my visit to Five Guys Burgers and Fries…

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver

Now, to those who haven’t heard/read about Five Guys, one of their biggest claim to fame includes that of current US president Barack Obama visiting their restaurant in Washington, DC. However, similar to what I wrote about Ezell’s Chicken and Oprah, just because they have $$$ and power does not mean what they like is necessarily good. If you are a long time reader, you should know that I am not a lemming jumping into any bandwagon: If it is good, it is good by its own rights. So, have all the hype surrounding this restaurant, it was time to try their goods…

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver, peanuts, free

There are several things that strikes me odd right from the beginning: its location. Out of all places in Metro Vancouver, they chose one that is not necessarily accessible to everybody: West Vancouver. Sure, you can get there by taking transit but, c’mon, there ought to be better and more accessible spots! The other one is, as you see above, peanuts. Now, I am not allergic to most food (as far as I know) but I have started to understand when people can’t eat some things because they can’t and not because they are not willing to. But, in the case of Five Guys, they seem to be clear that peanuts are there to stay. Oh, wait, did I mention these are free peanuts you can munch while you wait for your order? Now, it isn’t the greatest of the world but, at times, you can’t argue with free…

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver, open kitchen

And what seems to be a trend nowadays, open kitchen. Here, you can see them prepare the burgers and so on. But, alas…

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver, bag of fries

They do not cut their fries to order but have them stacked around the restaurant. Now, given it is a franchise, I do understand their need for standardization but, at the same time, I would guess they should consider finding local alternatives… Regardless, the proof is the final product.

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver, order served in a paper bag

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver, burger with bacon

In this case, I ordered their bacon burger. But, wait, did I mention a regular bacon burger but it comes with two patties? Well, it just happens that the regular burger does have two patties by default; if you want a burger with a single patty, you have to order the “little” version. Size-wise, it would about the size of two hockey pucks stacked one on top of the other. Darn, how times have changed… It seems that now everything is supersized by default… >_< Anyway, to make it a “meal”, I went for a side of fries and a drink. And, speaking of fries…

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver, french fries

In the end, the fries were a bit disappointing. It wasn’t bad, just that it wasn’t good by any stretch of the imagination. It had a dry starchy texture and fried a bit too long. It has been one of the few instances that I had to add catsup in a wacky attempt to salvage it. Furthermore, this is their regular fries – this portion can easily feed two or three…

Five Guys Burgers and Fries, West Vancouver

Back to the burger, you do not have an option of the doneness of the patties: in their case, well done (as in meat doneness) is the only way. At times, I don’t argue about it: if it is well done (as it skillfully done), it should taste great. As for condiments, I went “all in” as in “mayo, relish, onions, lettuce, pickles, tomatoes, grilled onions, grilled mushrooms, ketchup, mustard, jalapeno peppers, green peppers, A-1 sauce, Bar-B-Q sauce and hot sauce”. While some of the condiments are noticeable there, some are somewhat absent. For instance, I couldn’t taste any of the sauces (either that or they conflicted with each other in such a way they were working against each other)… And, as for the patties themselves… Well, there was some beef taste in it but it felt quite generic. It is as if you just threw some grounded meat and cook it through. If I had to compare it to a BK Whopper, it is that far away…

I won’t say that it is necessarily bad; however, there are a couple of things that prevent me from going back: price. The burger by itself is already in the $8 range. Once you add a drink and fries, it can easily balloon to $13 (though, of course, if it is two, they can share the fries). Furthermore, having it as takeout does not seem to be much of an option: in my case, after a couple of minutes to take pictures of the fries (while the burger was still wrapped) and the bun was starting already to get somewhat soft – hence, the reason I made almost no comment about it. As a result, I believe there are better options, including your more friendly White Spot (gasp!) or, given you have to drive all the way, Burger Burger (though, alas, its hours aren’t the best either). Could it be that something was lost in translation when it left Washington? Probably next time I am in the US I might found out but, based on this experience, not in any hurry.

“There are several things that strikes me odd right from the beginning: its location”…agreed, in AB they chose Medicine Hat over Calgary.

$13.00 may be the new norm in Canada when it comes to Burgers. Had a Burger in a similar joint last week in Edmonton and the combo added up to $15.00.

Peter, well, we have Burger Burger here and their burgers are really good. Cost? How about less than $7 (fries included)? But, agreed, otherwise, be prepared to fork (no pun intended!) $15 or so dollars.

Sherman May 21, 2010 at 6:29 am

And adding to Kim’s point about Burger Burger… If you go for the standard meal with Burger, Fries and Drink, it’s only $5 including tax. Sure, it doesn’t have the ambiance of a nicer burger joint, but for that price… But then again, H.Peter is right, the usual is $10+. Burger Burger is an anomaly.

I’ve been to a FiveGuys in Seattle, at Northgate, couple times. Pretty much the same experience you describe- okay, not cheap, and more than you care to eat. The walls are covered with testimonials, but I won’t be writing one. On the upside it’s convenient to the theatre.

Sherman, yeah, pretty much $10 is sort of a baseline. Come to think about it, I don’t have any problems paying $15 for a burger, fries/salad and drink; however, part of the problem with Five Guys is the baseline here in Vancouver: White Spot serves decent burgers with a decent ambiance at the same price.

stinky, that makes me wonder… Who actually wrote all that? Hmmmmm….

It’s all in the marketing. I have not yet eaten at Five Guys, to me though it looks like they are taking advantage of In-N-Out Burger’s reluctance to go national. For this they charge a premium.

My fifteen bucks Burger experience happened at Rodeo Burger in Edmonton.
Again, someone has watched the US Market well and brought a decent concept to AB.
Their Buns were the best I had in any Fast Food place.

Speaking of Burger Burger, I just went today again. Yum yum in my tummy for $5! :)

Definitely not interested in trying out Five Guys Burgers..

I had a burger from the same place as H.Peter, and agree that the price is higher than normal. Something I sort of hope doesn’t become the norm. It’s kind of a funny price point for a burger I think. Both Rodeo Burger and Five Guys is definitely more money than typical fast food, but doesn’t offer the ambiance and service of a sit down restaurant like say Cactus Club.

I’ve been meaning to hit the Five Guys in Medicine Hat during my next visit (why open the first Alberta franchise in a small market???), so I can’t comment on one yet, but from your reaction here, it’s a good thing Rodeo Burger is so close.

@stinky

Been to Johnny Rocket’s at the UW Village Mall ?

Meat is good, fries ok but I don’t eat a lot of fries as is to get all picky about them.

For cheaper, greasier but more “comfort food” burgers, ya gotta go to Dick’s Drive-In in Wallingford on NE 45 on the west side of I-5:

@KimHo

Kim, there’s also The Purple Onion in Kerrisdale (across from the Golden Arches). Very good home-made, hand-shaped patties that have that requisite “granular” texture that a good, ground chuck-based patty should have. Fries ARE good too, and a large basket is very sharable amongst 2-3 people. Wash it all down with their famous shakes and a piece of their pecan pie and you’re golden !

KimHo May 22, 2010 at 9:45 am

Peter, if there is something out of the ordinary, I would definitely mention it and, if it is indeed above par, chances are I will like it! :)

Kevin, again, if you go in a large group, price per person might go down a little bit due to people sharing the fries. Otherwise, Burger Burger time! :D

raidar, supply and demand; the more we want something, prices will increase. It is the question of where is the breaking point. In this case, Five Guys went above that point. Had it been a couple of $$$ cheaper, it is possible I would have liked it a bit more.

Lotusrapper, you mean Red Onion? It is in my to go list; the problem is that it is in the West Side, an area of Vancouver I don’t go that often. I guess I will be going soon! (But, then, there is Nimby in the queue as well).

Sherman May 22, 2010 at 6:12 pm

The Red Onion is pretty good. The fries are indeed crispy and a very large portion. Kim, venture into Kerrisdale. Maybe get TS to go!

KimHo May 22, 2010 at 6:27 pm

Sherman, TS is not take out food. :P

trisha May 22, 2010 at 8:19 pm

too bad about the fries, i actually thought they looked decent. it’s trickery though… entirely because the skins are on. for some reason that looks much tastier than without to me. the whole deal seems kind of pricey to me… but i suppose i really can’t judge!

LotusRapper May 22, 2010 at 10:50 pm

Ooops, I meant RED Onion :-/

Jenny May 25, 2010 at 4:59 pm

Oh wow, I was totally unaware of the fact that we had a Five Guys burger right here in Vancouver. I have to agree with you, it’s was a pricey burger, but it was good, at least the one I had in Orlando, maybe I will have to visit this one and do a comparison, see if they are consistent with their food/cooking.

I’m surprised, too, that Five Guys chose West Vancouver as their first Metro Vancouver location. West Vancouver doesn’t strike me as a burger city either…

THE BAGS STACKED AROUND THE RESTAURANT ARE NOT FULL OF FRIES. They are full of potatoes that are used to make the fries. Condiments are all free–I’d recommend the A1 sauce.

Robert June 4, 2010 at 6:06 pm

Five Guys is the best burger I’ve ever eaten in my life! The fries are awesome, but they don’t look good in the picture, maybe undercooked? Teh fries are usually perfect and they’re bottomless, like the drinks. It’s all in the topping combination for the burger. The toppings are all free but be careful not to overdo it and make a messy burger with competing flavors. I absolutely love the little cheeseburger (1 patty) with grilled mushrooms, green peppers, raw onions, jalepenos and barbeque sauce…Toppings that enhance the flavor of the burger.
