Pho Hoa (Burnaby) on Urbanspoon

Last week, on my Thursday post, I made reference to a post I had to reshuffle because it would have made that week too focused in one area of Metro Vancouver. One of the posts I had to do so is that of Pho Hoa, a restaurant in… Well, several places over Vancouver! While they do have several locations, I went to the one in Burnaby. That, of course, brings the question: why go to Pho Hoa? Well, the reason is similar to why I have been going to several restaurants in Kingsway in the Burnaby side: because of several errands and what not, I have been spending a lot of time in the area which translates into eating in places nearby. Hmmmm… Why suddenly I start to sound like Sherman??? :P

Pho Hoa, Burnaby, Kingsway

One seemingly unique feature of this restaurant is the fact they are open 24 hours… Or that is their claim. In its own interesting ways, it is a good and bad thing: If you are going for pho it means their broth is being prepared round clock; however, at certain times of the day, I wonder about the “quality” of the food. The day I went, it was around 9:00 p.m. so, in a way, it shouldn’t be that bad.

Interestingly, the restaurant was half packed which, again, in its own ways, is a good thing. More people, more turn around. However, as soon as I sat down, the restaurant started to empty. OK… Feel free to blame me! :P

Now, to the food. One “good” feature in their menu is how it is laid out for pho first timers. It breaks it down into how “adventurous” you are in their offerings. It has a combination of good and bad, though. Some options look way too similar – which is not helped because they do not keep a consistency in the order of how the meats are listed. Anyway, a regular bowl won’t do so, instead, I went for their “adventurous” options, which ended up being…

Pho Hoa, Burnaby, Kingsway, pho, #44, noodle, soup, brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, fatty, flank

Pho Hoa, Burnaby, Kingsway, bean sprout, lime, lemon

#44, noodle soup with brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, and fatty flank. Well, it is pretty much almost everything but the kitchen sink! An oddity was that, rather than a wedge of lime, it was a wedge of lemon – something that was experienced as well by shokutsu when he/she visited a Pho Hoa location in Seattle.

Pho Hoa, Burnaby, Kingsway, pho, #44, noodle, soup, brisket, flank, tendon, tripe, fatty, flank

If I had to describe this bowl of pho in one word, that word would be average. There wasn’t anything wrong but there wasn’t anything that stood out. The tendon was just a slab of tendon, while the tripe was, well, the same you would get in places like dim sum or something on those lines. The beef was rare and that was about it. And the broth… Well, I expected some more given what I mentioned above about the operation running 24 hours.

Pho Hoa, Burnaby, Kingsway, chicken wings, fried

Normally, along with the pho, I would have gone with a spring roll; however, this time, I wanted meat. So I ordered a side of chicken wings. In what seems to be something I have repeated myself a lot of times already in this post, there wasn’t anything spectacular about these. OK, it was nicely fried and still had some juiciness in it but, that aside, there wasn’t much. Not even that marinara-like dipping sauce. However, a squeeze of the lemon wedge gave it a good different twist so, from that perspective, it was good.

Hmmmm…. Should I repeat myself? OK, let’s try again. There is nothing wrong with Pho Hoa in the grand scheme of thing; however, because there wasn’t anything outstanding, it makes you wonder if, out of all places, this is the one you should go to. Well, if the 24 hours claim is true, if you are looking for something at 3:00 a.m., I guess that should do it. As for me, I am seldom awake at that time of the day and I am aware of other options…

The McDonald’s of pho. It is what it is.

You summed it up best. Nothing inherently bad, but not my first choice. I guess it’s a “safe” choice for those unfamiliar with Pho and also one of the only choices if you want Pho at 4:00am…

McPho, LOL !

Or since it’s 24-hrs, maybe they’re the Denny’s of Pho.

The other 24-hr operations I can think of are:

Kim Penh Xe Lua Pho (Broadway btwn Cambie & Ash)

247 Thai (SE corner Broadway & Oak) …… not Vietnamese. Sherman’s been there:

I’ve been noticing that lemons are showing up with increasing frequency aside pho bowls in some of my favourite Viet haunts around town recently. I thought maybe it was because limes are more expensive. I don’t love this “trend” though. Maybe I’ll have to start toting limes around in my purse :-) .

I thought the difference (lemon vs. lime) was just based on the discretion of each restaurant ? Hmmm, now my conspiratorial mind is starting to crank up.

Lime rules. Lemon is for raw oysters.

Melody, that is exactly what I said to shokutsu! :)

Sherman, but, then again, at times, it begs the question of what you were doing at time that of the day that requires you to look for any eats! ;)

LotsuRapper, Breka Bakery in Frasier is also a 24 hours operation, so is House of Dosas in Kingsway and Knight. Sometimes it begs the question: how bad does Vancouver need 24 hours restaurants? Hmmmm….. As for lemon vs lime, it depends. For example, in Panama, for the most part, we use it interchangeably. But, then again, the limes aren’t the small key lime but a larger version of limes (same size as lemon but orangey flesh). As for taste, again, it depends but I prefer lemon when I need a more “floral” type taste, whereas I would prefer lime when I need something more acidic. As for oysters, straight raw. :P

Grayelf, in some markets I go to, they are about the same price but, given they buy in bulk, it is possible they get one cheaper than the other…

I had a bad experience at Breka once, when the apple danish I ordered had a dead fly *inside* after I tore it open. Hey no one told me this was supposed to be savoury !!! I freaked, never gone back.

Dufiin’s Donuts at E. 41st/Knight is 24-hrs. Everything from donuts to banh mi, torta, burgers, some pastries, fried chicken and even bubble tea. They recently added this new item which I forget the name to (either Filipino or Latin American.

The old (rest in peace ….) Fresco Inn on Davie was 24-hrs. Man that place was a folly at 3am …..

I don’t like lemons in my Pho… I want limes! Just like in my Corona, Sol or Carib… :)

Promise me, we’ll all stop going to outlets of this place. The similarities confirm its the Mickey D’s of Pho. :)

shokutsu, promise! :)

I recommend Thai Son, a mini-chain of 3 outlets (two in Vanc, one in Richmond). Very nice broth and cuts of beef. I loooove the fried Viet roll + grilled pork bun (vermicelli) bowl, with heaps of chopped peanuts, coriander and green onion on top, drenched in the dipping vinegar !

LotusRapper, been to Thai Son:) But, yes, compared to Pho Hoa, it is a leap forward.
