Wings Pub & Grill

Almost a month or so ago, I wrote about House of Wings, a lounge/sports bar in the Highgate are of Burnaby, where I mentioned I don’t usually frequent sports bars. However, if food is good, hey, I am good to give it a try! Since I had given a chance to House of Wings, I thought I should give Wings Pub & Grill, which is a couple of blocks away. Similar to House of Wings, since they have Sunday specials, I decided to drop on that day but early enough to avoid any hockey crowd.

Fortunately, it was early enough and it was mostly empty. A couple of tables here and there but, otherwise, I could have grabbed any table. As mentioned above, I was up for the wings specials, i.e., on Sundays, $0.39/wing; however, they must be order in multiples of 10. I was hungry and ended up ordering 30 wings. Yeah, feel free to call me a glutton!

There is almost no point on taking individual pictures of the wings, they looked almost exactly the same! Of course, I am not expecting them to make separate batches, instead, have them fried and toss them in spices/sauces, depending on the order. On that note, I ordered Jakarta Heat, Louisiana Sweet and Maui Lime. Out of these three, the Maui Lime was the most interesting one in the sense the lime taste provided a “fresh” twist to the wings. Despite the site mentioned I needed a release form for the Jakarta Heat one, I wasn’t required to sign one. Still, it wasn’t as hot as it could have been – I barely broke a sweat.

At that point, having eaten 30 wings, I was mostly done. But, I did then something similar to what I did at House of Wings: I ordered a single piece of their hottest wing, in this case, their Bobby Wing, from the house of pain, wing. And, this time, yes, I was required to sign a release form. My thoughts? I was hot (though not the hottest one ever had) but hot not in the good way. OK, let me explain: there is hot spicy food where it entices you to eat more; however, in this case, it felt more like burning your tongue, to the point you can’t taste anything else. Furthermore, in my case, I got a bit of stomach discomfort afterwards. Definitely not in a hurry to order it again.
Overall, Wings does what is is supposed to do – mostly provide a place for people to gather together and, depending on the day, some “cheap” eats. So, if somebody checked with me if I want to go there for drinks and watch a game, probably I won’t do so without any complains.

My stomach would not be happy with me if I went for the Bobby Wing. I decided to not try it the time I went. My stomach thanked me… LOL…
i was in Buffalo when my boss wanted to hit the Anchor Bar, the original Buffalo wing. they had what they called their ‘suicide’ wings and before we could order it, the waitress told us that there’s no return on those and had us sample the sauce first, she was so disappointed when both my boss and i tasted it, she said….’wait for it’….we waited and just said, sure, we’ll take an order, she walked away so disappointed that we didnt’ think it was that spicy. when we ended up getting the orders we finished about 10 of the suicide (we ordered about 80 wings and a few appies).
Sherman, oh, c’mon, where is the “adventure” part?
Koji, that’s an interesting story! They could have started it but things might have gone in interesting ways afterwards, hehehehe.
did the Jakarta Heat batch of wings taste anything remotely Indonesian? I’ve never been here and I do love wings but ever since I tasted the wings at Aberdeen Centre Wo Fung, I crave those deep fried wings almost to an obsession lol!
sgtoca, since I am not from Indonesia, I can’t/wont’ say… Compared to Wo Fung, I will have to say these are not as good but, then again, pricewise (for Sunday’s special at least), has qualities of its own…
No sgtoca, the Jakarta heat don’t taste Indonesian at all, they should have got a recipe of Ayam Bumbu Rujak and then made it spicier than normal, but instead it has a similar taste to the Louisiana Sweet, which has a distinct Tabasco like flavor, which in my experience(11 years in Jakarta) is not very Indonesian. But the rest of their wings are pretty good.
