Saffron Indian Cuisine
4300 Kingsway
Burnaby, BC

Another week goes and, once again, I get to meet with other food bloggers for dinner. Just like last time, I got to meet Mijune for some catch-up (let me tell you, she is a busy woman!). Alas, in this, I was caught unprepared in the sense I didn’t really think of a place to eat. Believe it or not, choosing places to eat is not a simple task: there are times where we have way too many ideas; at times, we just draw blanks. Fortunately for me, Mijune remembered Saffron Indian Cuisine, as the name suggests, an Indian restaurant in the Burnaby side of Kingsway. I have been there in the past for their buffet but that was years ago (read: before I started food blogging) so that gave me a reason to revisit it. And who better than with a fellow blogger!

Ragazzi Pizza Truck

Am I creating a trend for this week? Nah, not really. In sort of a follow-up from yesterday’s post, on another day, I decided to drop by Chinese Skewer King‘s (CSK) “neighbour” in terms of food carts: Ragazzi Pizza Truck. Located in the northwest corner of Burrard and Pender (on Burrard), they serve something a lot of Vancouverites look as a $1.50 snack: pizza. Given the predominance of these shops in Downtown Vancouver (for example, just drop by Pender and Seymour), you’ve got to ask yourself one question: ‘Do I feel lucky?’… Oh, wait, wrong topic. But back to question: how would a pizza cart compared to those already established already?

After been back in town, it was time to tackle the remaining food carts in Vancouver. After all, given my experience in Re-Up BBQ, it was quite possible that my initial thoughts of food carts in Vancouver was mistaken and, actually, there was some glimmer of hope. That brings us to today’s post of another food cart in the Downtown Vancouver area: Chinese Skewer King, which, as the name suggests, has skewers. Can you go wrong with some meat-on-a-stick?

Delightful Cuisine

For good or for bad, in the couple of blocks near the corner of Robson and Denman in the West End, you tend to get more ethnic restaurant than other parts of Downtown Vancouver. For Japanese, you have different ramen places like Santouka, Kintaro and Motomachi, izakaya like Kingyo and Guu. Then you have several Korean restaurants like Kim Bob Chun Gook, Nor Boo Korean Restaurant, Ap Gu Jung and so on. For Thai, you have Khunnai Chang and Tangthai. However, given there is only that much space in the West End, this growth has come to the expense of others restaurants. For example, Rooster’s Quarters in Denman closed some time ago to be replaced by Pomegrante, which failed as well to now be replaced by Dajia, a Japanese restaurant, which over saturates the existing market. Notice I didn’t mention some that, otherwise, would be ubiquitous like Chinese (there is Main Dining Restaurant, Chongqing, Hon’s and Legendary Noodles) and Vietnamese. Ah, Vietnamese, the one that a lot of times is overshadow by the other ones mentioned above. But, then again, their presence in Downtown is a bit muted and it seems they focus more in the Kingsway and Fraser Street area instead. So, to a certain extent, having one nearby seems to be a good thing. When Delightful Cuisine took over the former spot of a French restaurant (which confirms the above), the question was would it fulfill those expectations?

It is a common question for food bloggers, specially those of us who write about restaurants, of whether we can cook or not. I mean, given that we tend to “criticize” about the food served in the restaurant, how about the food we cook ourselves? Truth is most of us, in a way or another, have written about a recipe so I am certain most of us can certainly cook. In my case, I haven’t done so for a long while and thought it was time. So, while I was in a local supermarket one day, I looked around to see what I was fancying to cook and then noticed the rotisserie chicken – something I buy once in a while as a form of “cheap”, quick, decent meal. So, I thought: How about I cook one myself? Something like…

I think it is somewhat commonly accepted by food bloggers in Vancouver that the larger the hype, the higher the standards by which you will be judged against. Of course, when I mean food bloggers, I am referring to those who actually go there, sit, order, eat and pay as would any customers and then write what he/she thought about it. Among my peers, I have been considered to be the biggest ba$7@rd when it comes to “criticizing”, despite I have mentioned a lot of times I don’t do reviews but, what I write, are merely experiences of my own. The funny part about this was that a dear friend told me that, lately, I have not been as bashful and harsh as in the past and have mellowed out a little bit. How true this is, I will leave it up to you; however, it might also be because I haven’t be to any of such “hyped” restaurants in a long while. Until the day I had to venture to that driving hell hole called Richmond to pick up my car, which gave me the opportunity to go to Aberdeen (which, fortunately, was somewhat empty that night) and go to one of the most hyped Chinese restaurants in a while: Chef Hung.

In what seems to be a crazy trend for posts on this week, similar to what happened on my post on Tuesday, for today’s post, I ended up in the Whalley area of Surrey. Now, to those not familiar, this used to be (and, to a certain extent, still) considered a criminalised area. However, times have changed and with the SFU campus in the area plus new condo constructions, it can be considered an upcoming area of sorts. After running an errand in the area (which did not involve anything green, leafy or powdery), it was close to lunch time and had to consider possibilities. Given that I am not that familiar with the area, I dropped a text message to Sherman asking for suggestions. After all, he frequents the area so often that have had close encounters with the police!
His first suggestion? “Pho Tam”. OK, that was good enough for me!
