About Me…

by KimHo on October 25, 2008

Hi!

Welcome to my second iteration/effort to start a blog. To those who are visiting for the first time, yes, I used to have another blog but decided to re-start everything. To those who were redirected to this new blog, some questions you might have…

1) Why did you decide to scratch the previous blog and restart another one?

There are several reasons, though the main one might have been a lack of focus. See, I used it mostly as a space to express whatever was in my mind. However, as the months went through, I started to notice, out of all possible topics, the two main topics I enjoyed writing the most were food and photography related. (A possible third one is travel).

2) So, what happened to the previous entries?

Actually, I managed to migrate most of them! However, I have placed some posts as private that are no longer related to the food, travel or photography. I must also mention, as a result, some links will be broken. While I will be working on this, it is quite possible a couple of links will direct you to null land. If that’s the case, please, let me know to fix it!

3) Why not keep the previous one as is?

This one is complicated. However, it can be summarised to change of focus. And, as a result of this change, I thought changing domain name was a good idea as well.

 4) What the hell with this blog name?!

It happens that’s my fundamental philosophy when it comes to food!

Now, putting all that aside, a bit about me…

I was borned in China but, when I was really young, my family moved to Panama, a small country in Latin America. Fast forward a couple of years later and I ended up in Vancouver, Canada. I am a Computer Science major but, for a living, my job is not related to that field. However, the knowledge and thinking methodology gained in that career, helps me a lot with my current job… (As a side-note, I must mention, the CompSci curriculum back then was quite different to the curriculum nowadays. It was more focused on mathematics than actual programming and design).

So why blog about food? While I don’t have any formal culinary education, I was brought up in a traditional Chinese family environment. That means two things: I was taught to appreciate food and willingness to try almost anything (it is said that Chinese people will “eat anything with four legs apart from table and chairs and anything that flies apart from airplanes”). Also, Vancouver is a multi-cultural city and blessed with a variety of restaurants. So, why not blog about it!

The change and sudden trackbacks from a new site threw me off for a minute, but soon figured out it was going back to the former Words of Wind site. :) Hope you enjoy the new direction in your blog!

Ooooopppssss. Sorry about that! ^_^

ET October 26, 2008 at 4:33 pm

Hey Kim – looking good and great name! Since it’s now more food focused, you don’t mind if I add you to our blogroll, do ya?

KimHo October 26, 2008 at 5:25 pm

Hi ET,

Please and thanks for that!

Hi KimHo, I am a regular fan of Chow Times and they linked to you as one of the recommended reads, so I had a look and I like it! I’ve only just started a blog, so compared to yours, mine has very few reviews.
Anyhow, I know how nice it is to have comments (for me anyway) so I just wanted to say that you’re found another pleased reader!

KimHo December 15, 2008 at 8:01 pm

Hello monchichi,

Welcome and thanks for you comments! (And, Ben and Suanne, thanks for linking me!).

Don’t worry, starting one, along with persistence, are the most important step. After all, this is the second iteration of my blog!

Melisa December 16, 2008 at 11:56 pm

Hello KimHo!

I just came across your page from a link from chowtimes as well, and I must say you are the very first chinese-panamanian I have met in Vancouver aside from my brother and I. Love your pictures and I’m looking forward to trying some of the restaurants in the downtown area mentioned here. Although I’ll like to find more latin american restaurants in vancouver as I’m really starting to miss the food in Panama…sancocho, arroz con pollo, ceviches…hmmmm

anyways I’m glad I found your blog it’s already bookmarked!

KimHo December 17, 2008 at 3:59 am

Hi Melisa,

Wow! And I was under the impression there weren’t that many Panamanians here. What are the odds! Given the scenario, suddenly, I feel the pressure to blog more on Latin American restaurants! ^_^;;;

Hi KimHo,

I recently started to do some marketing and PR for Irashai Grill in Coal Harbour. I stumbled across a review you wrote on the restaurant and I want to invite you to an Open House we will be having on May 28 so you can retaste the food. Please email me if this is something you are interested in and I will email you an invite.

Cheers!

Danielle

Hi Kim – I forgot to send you the URL for my blog which features your photos… it’s http://www.shopthedrive.com – let me know what you think.

Sooth December 16, 2009 at 12:22 am

Hi KimHo,

Just wondering, from your name, are you Hakka by any chance? And nice blog you have here. :)

KimHo December 16, 2009 at 12:35 am

Sooth, welcome! The answer will be… Yes and no! My grandmother is hakka. But my name has nothing to do with my family origins (though, if you can read Chinese, it is quite self-evident).

Nice blog you have here. It’s funny how after I spent some time in Asia eating delicious food I became sorely disappointed with most of the places I used to like in Montreal but lately with new places opening up I’ve actually become pleasantly surprised. Makes me want to talk about food again.

Hi there.. enjoying reading your posts, reviews and blogs.
Hey, if you’re interested in another White Rock restaurant that is actually a true ORIGINAL 50′s diner serving awesome food, check out Five Corners Café; I’m sure they’d love to have you review them. (Sherman’s beat you to it, however.. lol)
This place was opened in 1948 and still has some of the original design, decor and equipment; it’s run by 3 great local gals and has lineups most of the time with locals and visitors to White Rock alike. Here’s a couple of links – feel free to “like” the place.. :)
Urbanspoon – 69 Voted – 94% “Like”

Rice, by your enthusiasm (and the fact you have written similar posts in other blogs), it is possible you might be part of their management team. If that is the case, be careful with what you wish for! I have been know to be @$#%!@#$ strong with my posts, specially when it is the management team who suggests me to visit it! As for Sherman, although we are friends and we tend to agree a lot, we are not competing against each other at all so I am not sure how Sherman “beat” me…

Your new blog looks clean and lovely. I love the little quote about what Chinese people will eat. It made me laugh out loud.

Arnaldo August 4, 2010 at 1:27 am

Hello Kimho;
I enjoy your new site and hope that you get a chance to travel “all over the place”. I lived in Panama in the 90′s and will be going to the city of Santiago de Veraguas. I have 1 night for some dining in Panama city ….. just one night … Any suggestions? Algun “Palo Loco” de esos that you wish you had checked out? Saludos !!!

KimHo August 4, 2010 at 5:35 am

Arnaldo, welcome! Truth is I can’t provide a suggestion mainly because things have change so much that any suggestion might not be valid. Sorry! However, if you check La Prensa, in the Vivir+ section, you should be able to find something. Hint: search for “Aristologa”.

Mo Chan August 27, 2010 at 12:45 pm

As for your comment regarding the chinese eating anything with 4 legs… you give us too much credit… no legs is enough for us to slaughter and eat every delicious bit of it!

(Found your site thru Urbanspoon)

KimHo August 27, 2010 at 10:57 pm

Mo Chan, welcome and thanks for your comments! Well, if people freak out at four legs, can you imagine when there is something with more legs? ;)

Mo Chan August 29, 2010 at 12:59 am

more than 4 legs? fried centipedes are very yum yums in asia!
