Quiche (or Refrigerator Pie)

by KimHo on March 21, 2010 under: Food,Random

It has been ages already since I wrote a post of me cooking. The truth is with all the activities going around, including the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games, I haven’t taken my time to look for new things to try. I did cook but mostly simple, quick fix type recipes. However, there was dish I have had in my mind for quite some time.

See, I like eggs, with one of my personal favourite dishes being the Chinese steamed egg, it was only a matter of time for me to prepare the Western version of this dish: quiche. But… But… There is one thing that really bothered me: that of stereotyping men for eating this dish, as referred to in a “book“. Sure, it is tongue-in-cheek but, when I first ordered it long time ago, there was an endless poking fun of me. Don’t get me wrong, it is a good dish but… So, as Alton Brown puts is, just call it “refrigerator pie” to be safe of such fun poking. With that in mind, it was a matter of time I wanted to try it myself…

Restaurant Self-Ban

by KimHo on March 13, 2010 under: British Columbia,Random,Restaurant

For the most part, there are almost no restaurants I am not willing to visit. From the street vendor (far too few in Vancouver, in my humble opinion) to fast food chain restaurants (I did visit McDonald’s for my Smore’s and Brulee McFlurry posts!) to “casual dining” (whatever that means) restaurants to fine dining. If it is food and I have the cash to afford it, chances are I will go. Of course, unless, that place is in the middle of nowhere (or Richmond!). And, as the name of this blog implies, I am only there for the food; the rest is something I can live with our without.

So, that begs the question, would I return to a restaurant that I have mentioned I won’t go back? Unfortunately, chances are there might be some chances. No, I am not flip-flopping on this now. The truth is that things might have change since my last visit and it can go both ways. Good restaurants might have gone south while those I did not like have improved. Furthermore, some of the restaurants I do not like, unfortunately, are places where people like to gather (mainly because their location and layout favours this type of activities). I might grumble about their selection but, between not meeting them and choosing to give them a second chance, I think I will rather meet them – after all, friends can last a lifetime while restaurants might come and go.

To those who do not know yet, last Friday was   the opening ceremony for the Vancouver 2010 Winter Olympic Games. During the next two weeks, in addition to my regular food/restaurant blog posts, I will try to do photo essays of the city, specially of the Downtown Vancouver/Yaletown area and probably some of the other installations across town. Sorry, no Cypress or Whistler… I mean, you can watch the sport events themselves in TV and news you might not necessarily see the rest that Vancouver has to offer. And that brings the topic of this post…

In the last week or so, I have been receiving emails asking for suggestions on places to eat, things they have to try, restaurant they should visit and so on. And it goes all ways, some for cheap, something they should spare no expense and so on. The commonality of the request is the Downtown/Yaletown area of town. I tried my best answering those emails but, as explained in my response, in my opinion, Yaletown is full of expensive restaurants where the focus is not always in good food. Instead, I suggested expand a little bit more. Based on the couple of emails I have replied, I thought I should compile what I have written and put it in a post.

Update: The topic of price gouging has popped up in the comments section. I thought I should include some links here, as a caveat emptor for out of town customers. I love Vancouver but despise that restaurant owners is taking advantage of the Olympics to obtain additional revenues.

  • A site maintaining a naughty or nice list of restaurants.
  • An article (and video) from CTV.

Feel free to call me a !@#$%!@#$ teaser bastard. Go ahead, I have really thick skin! :P

As mentioned yesterday, DougieDog offers some interesting mix of hot dogs. Kimchi in a hot dog? Guacamole? Oh, wait, we sort had fun about similar ideas in the past, it was matter of a place actually offering it here in Vancouver – something that DougieDog has in a way achieved. However, the question is whether they have one that goes head to head against the #1 dog (pun intended) in hot dog terms in Vancouver: JapaDog. And, yes, they do: Tokyo Dog - Japanese Mayo, Okonomiyaki Sauce, Bonito Flakes, Nori Flakes.. So, here goes it goes, JapaDog Terimayo vs. DougieDog Tokyo Dog!

OK, here is something I am not afraid of admiting: I used to like to eat breakfast sandwiches in McDonald’s. Specifically, I liked the folded egg with sausage in a biscuit (just in case – the American definition of biscuit). However, they phased that one in favour of the Egg McMuffin. Not that it is not good, I just preferred the other version. In a way, it was a good thing, as ever since, I stopped going and started to prepare breakfast myself. Enter Tim Hortons Breakfast Sandwich. For the most part, it was almost example the same as that breakfast sandwich I used to like; however, because I changed my diet, rather than jumping directly to have it every single day, I would have it once in a while, specially when I am in Vancouver International prior to a flight. Since comparing a discontinued product (or, at least, not available here, as far as I could see) is unfair, I thought it would be a good thing. That is… Until Tim Hortons released their new breakfast sandwich: instead of using a biscuit, it was made of an English muffin. So I couldn’t help it… The battle of Breakfast Sandwiches… (And borrowing that line from Iron Chef:) Whose cuisine reigns supreme? :)

I am no food stylists, nor I will try to make it look as good as shown in ads! :P

Blogger Demographics

by KimHo on January 23, 2010 under: Random

So the other day I was checking some tweets when I notice one in particular regarding the most prolific writers/bloggers in Vancouver. I wasn’t expecting anything in particular, not even ranked at all because, well, I did not register myself for such thing! However, when I looked at the list, I was surprised to be fifth. How that came to happen?! Now, I won’t be starting any investigation as to their ranking mechanism, rather, I will focus on something… Odd (for the lack of a better word): the demographics of the people who is writing blogs/tweets, specifically… How come there are some many Far East Asians (or descendant)?!

As I mentioned in a tweet on Friday night, I am back in Vancouver! And where was I? How about a couple hundred of click south? Yes, I was in Seattle… Wait, make that Tacoma. It was a bit unfortunate it was raining the whole time, not to mention I was far from Downtown Seattle. I did go there on my way back but, still, I couldn’t take that many pictures of the area (aside from rain, did not have a tripod with me). But, even then, I am glad to be back in Vancouver. As a reminder of where I live, I decided to take a small walk – hey, both cities have certain similarity (rain aside…). Here, a small photo essay.

Note: Clicking the image will open it in a new window.
