As mentioned yesterday, DougieDog offers some interesting mix of hot dogs. Kimchi in a hot dog? Guacamole? Oh, wait, we sort had fun about similar ideas in the past, it was matter of a place actually offering it here in Vancouver – something that DougieDog has in a way achieved. However, the question is whether they have one that goes head to head against the #1 dog (pun intended) in hot dog terms in Vancouver: JapaDog. And, yes, they do: Tokyo Dog - Japanese Mayo, Okonomiyaki Sauce, Bonito Flakes, Nori Flakes.. So, here goes it goes, JapaDog Terimayo vs. DougieDog Tokyo Dog!

OK, here is something I am not afraid of admiting: I used to like to eat breakfast sandwiches in McDonald’s. Specifically, I liked the folded egg with sausage in a biscuit (just in case – the American definition of biscuit). However, they phased that one in favour of the Egg McMuffin. Not that it is not good, I just preferred the other version. In a way, it was a good thing, as ever since, I stopped going and started to prepare breakfast myself. Enter Tim Hortons Breakfast Sandwich. For the most part, it was almost example the same as that breakfast sandwich I used to like; however, because I changed my diet, rather than jumping directly to have it every single day, I would have it once in a while, specially when I am in Vancouver International prior to a flight. Since comparing a discontinued product (or, at least, not available here, as far as I could see) is unfair, I thought it would be a good thing. That is… Until Tim Hortons released their new breakfast sandwich: instead of using a biscuit, it was made of an English muffin. So I couldn’t help it… The battle of Breakfast Sandwiches… (And borrowing that line from Iron Chef:) Whose cuisine reigns supreme?

I am no food stylists, nor I will try to make it look as good as shown in ads!

So the other day I was checking some tweets when I notice one in particular regarding the most prolific writers/bloggers in Vancouver. I wasn’t expecting anything in particular, not even ranked at all because, well, I did not register myself for such thing! However, when I looked at the list, I was surprised to be fifth. How that came to happen?! Now, I won’t be starting any investigation as to their ranking mechanism, rather, I will focus on something… Odd (for the lack of a better word): the demographics of the people who is writing blogs/tweets, specifically… How come there are some many Far East Asians (or descendant)?!

As I mentioned in a tweet on Friday night, I am back in Vancouver! And where was I? How about a couple hundred of click south? Yes, I was in Seattle… Wait, make that Tacoma. It was a bit unfortunate it was raining the whole time, not to mention I was far from Downtown Seattle. I did go there on my way back but, still, I couldn’t take that many pictures of the area (aside from rain, did not have a tripod with me). But, even then, I am glad to be back in Vancouver. As a reminder of where I live, I decided to take a small walk – hey, both cities have certain similarity (rain aside…). Here, a small photo essay.

Ah, new year… Just in case, if you missed it, once again, Happy New Year! Of course, before the new year, there is the end of year, time where different media starts writing articles on the top X for different categories. Top news, events, etc. Of course, this being a food, mostly restaurant, related blog, my main point of interest would be exactly that, restaurants. So, just to follow trend, here is my top 10 restaurants…

First of all, Happy New Year, everybody!

(Click on the picture for a larger version in a new window).
Since it is New Year, I thought to start it with something really different. Those who have known me for a *long* time, know there are a couple of things I dislike about the Internet. Instant Messaging, chain emails, memes, etc. etc. etc. So, why the hell I am doing this? I guess it is part of the “discovery” process. Other than fellow bloggers whom I have met in different gatherings, most readers of this blog (whom I really appreciate you drop by!) have no idea about me. So, just for fun, I thought I should do this, i.e., drop tidbits about the person behind this blog by listing 25 random things. And, oh, no, I won’t post a picture of myself…

Some time ago, fellow blogger Sherman visited Salumi, a well known deli in Seattle, and his post was received in a negative way. In an unfortunate way, Sherman’s recent post of Finch’s revived that topic which resulted in further negative feedback.
I have met Sherman personally for some time, consider him a friend, and have learned how he assesses a restaurant. We have agreed a lot of times (something we both think is scary) and, every single time we disagree, we understand why we disagreed. Because of this, it is safe for me to say that I can trust his judgment most of the time.
So why I bring this up? In a couple of weeks, I will be travelling to SeaTac for other reasons and, on my way back to Vancouver, I will try to stop at Salumi to confirm/deny Sherman’s originally thoughts. One of the main points of contention was that of the sampled sandwich, i.e., instead of being made to order, it was already pre-made. So, my challenge to you is the following: Which sandwich I should order? At almost $10 a sandwich, I am willing to buy at most two (most likely eat half and half on the spot and bring home the rest). In the Salumi post, two sandwiches were mentioned: mole salami and fresh mozzarella. Are these two an accurate representation? If not, what are your thoughts? Deadline for this post will be Jan 17th!
Update – Just came back from my trip. Yup, I “cheated” on the date! Salumi post coming soon, hehehehe.
